Is CruiseNCarry back in business? When I was looking for parts a few
years ago they were generally what was left of dealer stock and not
many dealers. By the way I was most happy to get rid of that engine.
It was a pain in the neck to start and would take your arm off if
you were not careful. I am now happy to have a reverse gear. At
present I have a Nissan 5hp 4cycle, Yamaha 4hp 2 cycle and Honda 25hp
4 cycle all fairly new. All start reliably. The Yamaha and Nissan are
both roughly $1000; the Nissan from BoatUS on sale most of the time
and the Yamaha on sale locally here in northern Michigan. I prefer 4
cycle for relative quietness and better idling. The Honda can idle all
day. An Evinrude 8 2 cycle I had on a previous sailboat would not idle
but perhaps it was that particular engines wont.

Maybe so, but by the time I spend the $75 to buy it, and $100 to ship
it, I'm almost half way to a new Tanaka or Tohatsu of the same HP.

Or, the $175 would almost buy a new Cruise-N-Carry, which I
understand is the same thing as the Sears Gamefisher.

Age is irrelevant. If it is in good condition, it will give long and reliable
service. American outboards before 1970 or so were nearly agricultural in
their design :-) It is fairly easy to find a parts engine for such as that
Elgin, and coils, points, etc. are easy to source for most of them. Finally,
if it is in good condition, $75 is a bargain. OTH, I bought a '54 Johnson 5.5
for $55 a few years back and ended up putting another $125 in it. Now I have
a really fine, great running engine for which I wouldn't take $350.

Don't buy it if you aren't a tinkerer. It may take a bit of that to get it in
proper nick.
