Re: Outboards
I have a couple hondas and they are absolutely incredible!! Both the 40 and the 50 allow you to hear
a conversation at 20 mph.
However, on a boat you want to sail, beware of adding too much weight. My Nissan 3 1/2 hp is only
28 pounds or so. Much more than that and the aft end tends to squat on my sailboats.
Other considerations - the older outboards with their 20/1 mix really do add a lot more oil to the
water. If you only need to get your sailboat out of the harbor, a good trolling motor will do - the
previous owner of my Venture 21 used this setup for lake sailing.
I am mistrustful of the longevity of the less expensive aircooled outboards (except the Honda 2).
Can anyone who has actually logged some hours on one give us a report? The price and weight are sure
right!
Lastly, I had a dealer tell me that for salt use he did not like the Honda 5 (only the 5) as it had a
place where salt water could collect and not ge rinsed out by the average owner. Again, anyone with
experience? I think that this would make a great kicker for a fishing boat or sailboat.
Cheers,
Jim
