I have mostly switched to the payson joint after trying several styles over the years
MOST OF THE Bolger boats I have built I built by using the plans in various books MABIB and all his other books most were adapted to the crabbing /trapping I use these boat for

When you say butt joints are you talking butt joints with a wood backing or the glass butt joint that Payson came up with? I've used the Payson joint in several boats, two of which I know are still going strong as one is mine and the other was mine and now belongs to a good friend. He has the Microtrawler and it is 19 years old and those joints are still good. My Bantam is now 8 years old and no problems, so there is nothing wrong with a Payson style glassed butt joint.

I've built several 8' Skimmer-type boats as well as a couple of almost 16' sharpies with panels butt-jointed. With a 10' version of the Skimmer, I think I would just pay the extra bucks for a  5' x 10' marine ply panel from World Panel in either FL or NC:  World Panel Products: Marine Plywood & Teak

Hmm I figure I've paid a designer good money to draw a boat. If I was any good at it I'd have drawn it myself. With that in mind, why would I modify his design without his input. Dudley Dix drew me a very pretty boat a while back but I made now changes with out his signing off on it.

Just my thoughts. It's a complex business and it's very easy to turn a nice boat into an unseaworthy killer.

Would be a good use of an extra sheet of plywood if you can stand the extra weight. Probably best to add another thwart or frame at the butt or make a foredeck a few feet long. Now we've made it too heavy to cartop or lift in the back of a pickup and increased power needed to plane to make our 12 footer. Made it cost nearly as much as a similar size jon boat.

I always thought widening the center skid to a 1x6 and doubling it may help light load top speed. This would be irresponsible and encourage shenanigans and I'm all for that sort of thing. Would be tempted to add a 3rd layer of center skid if it didn't break free.

I built one years ago and gave it away before I used it.

Has anyone ever added a foot or 3 to skimmer by simply adding a butt jointed extra pannel to the back end of either side and of course not building a "zipper" into the boat thanks guys

Hi! How are you?

I send you this file in order to have your advice
