[bolger] Re: Bobcat or Surf

Here are my figures for the surf.

Montauk Home Depot

4 sheets 1/4" ACX fir $100 $60
100 feet 2x4 fir $ 50 $25
3 gallons raka 2:1 epoxy $120
10 yards raka 4 oz cloth $ 50
1 big bag of rake glass dust $ 12
misc. raka glassing tools $ 10
1 gallon porch paint $ 33 $20
Shraeder gudgeons and pintels $ 50
Some rope
A thrown away jig with 13' luff

TOTAL $425 $347

This is enough glass to do the topsides as well as the bottom, and
enough resin to do the job twice (which you'll need the first time
out,) and enough paint to paint another boat. I didn't glass the
topsides of my teal, and did glass the topsides of my scooner. No
comparison on how the two of them are weathering.

Well, there can be a lot of variation depending on what materials you
use. AXC fir, or marine plywood? If marine, will it be fir,
Malaysian Meranti or Bruynzeel? Polyester or epoxy resin? On Surf,
will you sheath the entire outside, just the bottom, or not at all?
Real sail or polytarp? Trim of mahogany or mystery "whitewood" from
Home Despot? House paint, marine enamel, or 2-part polyurethane?

That said, I did a rough calculation for Bobcat, assuming epoxy
resin, Malaysian marine plywood, relatively decent wood for trim and
spars, and Kirby's paint. I also added the price of a sail from
Payson, and a moderate amount of Harken Hardware. This is what I'd
use if I were building her myself.

8 sheets 6mm plywood @ $30 ea - $240
½ sheet 19mm plywood $60
2 gallons epoxy resin @ $30 ea $120
Fillers for epoxy $50
15 yds glass cloth @ $8 /yd $120
40 yds glass tape @ $3 /yd $120
Other wood $200
Fasteners $45
Paint – 3 Quarts. @ $20 $60
Sail $425
Rope $50
Hardware $100

Miscellaneous and optimism $200

Total $1900

Of course you could cut this down by twenty or 30 percent by using
cheaper materials, and by a lot if you scrounged well. I'd guess
that Surf would be about half of that, FWIW.

Hi John, I have purchased the plans for BobCat from Mr Payson. My
best
estimate for building it including sails is US$1591. This is using
better material than marine fir and not as good as Brynzeel or
equivalent.
Plywood 8sheets @ $55=440, Epoxy $150, Mast $30, Boom $10, Gaff $10,
Sail (from Mr Payson) $420, Plans and book $56, running rigging $50
Lead $50, Fibreglass cloth $115, Fibreglass tape $20, Hardware, I'm
guessing at $100, Contingencies $140, Total US$1591. Probably the
biggest saving would be in making your own sail. Cheaper plywood
might
save a few dollars but at the expense of longevity. I think BobCat is
a nice enough boat to use good quality and it is not a whole lot more
than your original $1000 budget. But then these prices are US
dollars.
I started with the mast but have been delayed by a renovation project
on a Cape Dory Typhoon. When I get rid of everything else I will have
the Typhoon and a BobCat. I plan to work very slowly on the Cat and
have a quality boat at completion.

What is the best guess for the cheapest price of putting together (a) the
Bobcat and (b) Surf?

I'm on a limited budget and can scrounge with the best of them, but there's
always a limit.

Thanks, folks.
