[bolger] Re: BADGER replacement and CHAMPLAIN
Tim Fatchen is correct in his caution to take an AS-29 into serious
harm's way. We were not proposing to offer AS-29 to the Hills. Or LOOSE
MOOSE II, although Bob and Sheila Wise know more about that than we
do...
But a 38'x11'6" x21" Centerboarder x two-inch bottom x one-inch
topsides with options of Chinese Gaff Cat-Yawl, Cat-Ketch/Periauger
(most conservative of the lot), Yawl, air-cooled diesel, and good
four-digit range under power etc. and non-athletic liveability might be
of interest - still homebuildable to a displacement of around
24.000lbs. Principles similar to 16.000lbs 38'x9'x18"/22"TAHITI
passagemaker. Design is maturing. In that displacement range steel gets
interesting...
There are at least five CHAMPLAINs out there. Sedgewick in WI
commissioned the design and got his bright and off-white finished
beauty into the water first we think. Closely followed by Van Pelt of
Ontario whose just come back from his second annual 3-week inland
cruise w/ some mild St.Laurence thrown in.
MAIB had all discussions and recent updates. CHAMPLAIN is fit for
sensible coastal cruising, i.e. cell-phone distance with occasional
jumps according to weather. Van Pelt gets 13+MPG on average and even
at full 6.5kn the 52 gals will be enough for a faster passage than most
'real' cruisers under sail would brag about. Bow's 5 foot high and she
is unsinkable - some comfort... NO, not for the Hills!!!
