RE: [bolger] Centerbord pivot (and rudder stock)

Fraser Howell used aluminum for his rudder and centreboard -- you might ask
him for details.

Myself, I used a 1/2 inch bronze pin in the plywood board, fitting into 1/2
inch inside diameter bronze bushings, cut from a bit of bronze pipe. I put
a bushing into the centreboard as well as in the case sides.

For my rudder post, the retired machinist who made it up for me used 1 1/4
inch s/s pipe, just because he had it on hand.

The boat lives on its trailer, I've been using it for over a year with no
problems so far.

Subject: [bolger] Centerbord pivot

I'm getting ready to cut and build the centerboard and case for the
Chebacco Cruiser.

The plans leave a lot to the imagination. Anybody have any pictures
or drawings of the pivot mechanism on their centerboard boat?

Also, I'm toying with making the pivot out of 1 1/8" solid aluminum
rod, with aluminum bearing surfaces. Any of you engineer types want
to comment? Not strong enough? To soft? I figure, most of the side
forces will be taken by case, and it will probably only pivot a
couple of thousand times in the lifetime of the boat, so wear is not
really a problem....

Anyone? Gregg?
