[bolger] Re: Speaking of asymmetry...

Jack: I too have plans for the WDJ but have not started building. I did
cost out and figured roughly 46 pieces of 1/2 ply, 5 of 3/4 and 2 of 1/4.
Bjorn thinks the project will cost in the 7k range; I figured it to be in
the 12-13k range but that includes a trailor and motor as well as sails,
rigging etc. 7-8k is probably right for the basic boat. Ply to cost in
the 3k range, epoxy in the 500-600, wood about 1k. Motor figured to be
1500-2000, and trailor 2000. The sails were quated at 1750. I have not
figured masts, hardware, and misc supplies.
This is the most expensive boat building project that I have seriously
thought about doing. It may be a quick a dirty boat but it aint cheap. I
agree that Bjorn's pictures have been inspiring as well as Bill Jochems
pictures of finished boat on Lake Mead. See
www.ace.net.au/schooner/jochems.htm for pictures of the finished boat.

Great to hear your a WCTSS member! What do you sail? I've been thinking
about cedar key - I should get the trailer about the 10th of Jan. Cedar Key
wasn't exactly where I wanted to make the first sail - strong tides and all
that - especially since I still only have a two horse outboard - I remember
my sea pearl barely making it against the tide there and she has little
windage and only weights 600 lbs. We'll have to see. I really wanted to make
the first sail at Lake Harris in the center of the state. Steve

Huge thanx to Bill and Bjorn (where'd you find a Nordic keyboard). You've
no idea how inspiring and affirming your messages are. Bjorn, you are
leaving me in the dust. You will likely be far out to sea by the time I get
started with my WDJ. But believe me, you'll be hearing from me. For
starters you can tell me how many sheets of plywood she needs. I'm hard
pressed to figure this out from Phil's "step by step" that came with the
plans. I will have the luxurary of an inclosed workshop. But that's also
the reason for the delay. (I've got to build the workshop this winter.) For
that matter, what did you use for plywood?

Bill Jochems, if you're out there, please share some anecdotal narrative re
Saphire's performance. Susanne's picture shows her reefed for a high winds.
How'd she do? Can you picture her dealing with the most radical tides on
the planet?

Dear Jack,

Welcome!

There's a pic of William D. Jochems in the Jan-Feb issue of Water Craft.

See www.watercraft.co.uk for further details of this excellent mag.

Greetings fellow Bolger enthusiasts. Trully delighted to have descovered
this listserve. You're a very lively community.

I built a June Bug spring before last and love her dearly. I'm about to
embark on a stretched Gull for this winter's project. The purpose of
building the dory (besides the beauty and pleasure of the craft itself) is
to prime myself for starting my major project in the spring, a Jochems
schooner, (aka Family schooner). PCB suggests that its a design very well
suited to the Bay of Fundy, my home waters. I'm convinced that he's right. I
purchased the plans a year ago and am now nearly ready to begin building. If
anyone has built/ sailed/ sighted one of these I'd be thrilled to hear about
it. I'd particularly love to see photos of this vessel. So any leads to that
effect would also be welcomed.

Greetings Jack,
I am currentlig building a WDJ Schooner and you can see pictures of my projekt in the "Vault". As you may know only the prototype is built and the pictures of this beauty can be seen here:http://www.ace.net.au/schooner/jochems.htm#start
My home ground is the Oslo fjord and the south east coast of Norway. I am building under the shade of a tree and you can imagine that the norwegian climate dictates a building pause till spring. However I hope to finish bits and pieces like spars, rudder, leeboards and so on in my garage/basement this winter. I hope to launch my baby in June... I'd be happy to share building expierience with you. Bill Jochems is also monitoring this list and will surely share his knowledge with you/us.
Best
Bjorn
