Well, PCB surely isn't approving of majorly modifications. Can't say I
am either. Our AS29 had a number of bright-idea type design changes
introduced by her original owner, which the builders duly complied with.
Every single one (of about twenty, moderate to minor) degraded the
function of the boat to some extent, ranging from weakening the
structure in the most significant case to providing permanent irriation
value in the least significant cases. eg: the cockpit floor is flat, so
things dropped don't roll out (the design calls for a slightly sloping
cockpit floor), so the the change means - you guessed it - the cockpit
pools rainfall,,,
BO>A down side of Bolger's box boats is they tend towards lines
BO>"only a mother (builder) could love."
People are surprised at how good they actually look on the water, where
the curve of the hull bottom is hidden...
Anyway, thank you all for the mystery solving and the vault piccies. But
I think I'll keep this AS29 derivative well away from the AS29 pages...

From bitter experience, I am not overly inclined to regard major modifications
of any successful design as being sensible. I have been forced to burn a
couple of my own "improved" vessels, and had one eaten by termites (thus
saving me the trouble of burning her). The fact that this boat is for sale is
telling in that regard. Obviously, you do not build one of these things for
profit, but for personal use. If you want to make money, build a MacGregor 26,
or put your money in a decent stock fund. I think some modification is
possible to personalize any design. Interiors can stand a lot more tinkering
than, say, rigs and hulls, but even there there is great potential for
mischief. If I were in the market for an AS-29, I would want one built to
plan, so I would at least know what I was getting. If I were to build one, I
might modify some odd things here and there, but I would seek PJB's advice
(and pay for it) before proceeding with any radical transformation. On small
daysailers one can experiment cheaply and the results, if not satifactory, can
be fixed or recycled. A thirty foot, seven thousand pound mistake is difficult
and expensive to deal with, however,

that they are unconventional. Every one of his boats is visually appealing
in form and should not be monkeyed with without considering that aspect.
Just because a design seems practical to an extreme does not mean no effort
was made to make it look good. This "Island Time" is a good example of a
modification making a perfectly good design into an ugly boat.
Just had to get that off my chest.

The boat in the pictures was built by Bruce Brasington of Gainsville.
It is a heavily modified AS-29, built in fiberglass. The house is from
a Mirage 34. The boat uses an off-centerboard in lieu of bilgeboards.
It is written up in Volume 10, Issue 4 of Bernie Wolfard's old
Common Sense News, has been for sale in Boat Trader for a few
years, and is probably just the sort of bastardization of a thoughtful
design that gives Bolger (or any other self-respecting naval architect)
migraines,

Thanks for solving that mystery. I take by your tone you aren't

curious why she went up for sale so soon after completion. Being prone
to experimentation myself I can understand the temptation to tweaking
designs though, and the potential risks when it's a cruiser being

What's up with the house? At first I thought there was a J/30 behind it!
Back some years ago, I used to do some whitewater kayaking with a guy named
John Conneely who used to build boats down in Florida. He was a big fan of
Bolger's I found out later. He built a bunch of boats, including a "Romp"
(he may have built THE Romp, I didn't know much about this stuff when I last
talked to him in '95). This boat could be one of his.
Merry Christmas all!

Unless thats a heavily modified AS 29, I'm stumped. The positioning of the
ports would seem to preclude bigeboards, making this some type of a
centerboarder? And there's no gaff sitting on top of the boom, so this
would be a leg-o-mutton main?
This may be one of those designs that were never published in a book, or
elsewhere. And boy, that doghouse doesn't fit with the rest of the boat.
Thanks David. This reminds of me of a canal cruisng expedition to Sarasota
about three years ago where I found a rather derelict looking Micro floating
bow down with no masts at someone's dock. If squareboats aren't maintained
with paint etc, they do start looking sort of dowdy.

If you can get these scanned, please upload to the vault. I can't think of
a 31 footer off the top of my head. Where is the boat (city/state) if
someone wants to take a look ?
Another boat for sale: The boat built by Edey & Duff, Bird of Dawning I
think (plans in 30 odd boats or different boats I think) is still for sale
here in St. Petersburg, FL. This boat was moored at the Municipal Marina
from '94 until early this year. I thought it had been sold when it left the
marina, but it apparently just moved to a cheaper slip somewhere. I'll try
to track it down and get a picture.
