Re: Chebacco speed
Yeah, this is what I expected. This is 30% faster than 5 knots...

Greetings from Halifax
My Chebacco (Itchy & Scratchy) will keep up 6.0 - 6.5 mph with with a 12
-15 breeze in any point of sail except close hauled, faster if there is
any sea behind. A 4.5 hp ob will push it at 5.5 mph wot, 4.5 mph at 1/2
throttle.

I think what Vincenzo was trying to say was that the Chebacco was
undercanvased for his area.
The Chebacco has about 40% more sail area than my AF2, is slightly
shorter, a bit wider, and quite a bit heavier. All in all, I would
guess it would run about the same speed in most conditions, and
faster in rough water.
One of the nice things about Chebacco is that it would
take "hurricane force" (ala Bolger) winds to knock it down. It may be
slower than some of the luggers in Venice with 300 squares of sail,
but you probably couldn't take one of them for a hop across the bay
either.

Hi Pippo:
I think that you will find that this is about right for any displacement
sailboat of this size. The rule is something like: speed = 1.34 X square
root of the waterline length in feet. Not sure if the speed is knots or mph,
but there is not a lot of difference. If you want something faster, get a
Donzi....or a multihull.

Dear Chebacchisti, I'd like to hear feedback on how fast the Chebacco
sails. I've sailed with my 16' boat this summer, and the very best I
could go on a beam reach (with the boat heavily loaded though: 5 or 6
people on board) was about 3.5-4 knots in force 3-4. My boat is quite
heavy w.r.t. to the size, and the sail area is relatively small. My
question is: could I expect significantly better performance from a
Chebacco? The reason why I'm asking is because I've read a report
from an Italian guy on his lapstrake Chebacco, saying that he's not
been able to go as fast as 5 knots in 15-20 knots of wind. This seem
surprising, because Chebacco turn out to be a "racer" in terms of
