[bolger] Re: Perfect Skiff catalog page
After looking at the pics from Mr. Webber and Bernie's PDF file, the sail
plan doesn't look nearly as large as it did on paper.
Could one of you (or both) describe the rigging and use of the rig? I think
it would be educational, at the very least (a Solent Lug? right). I
originally asked some of the intial "...anybody know anything about the CSD
skiff...?" as I had thought of it as a good boat to build and use for my
area. I ended up with my Windsprint project thanks to John's Website and
Patrick's, where I figured I could turn if I got really stuck. Now we find
that, with the vault and those participating, the same resource might be
available to a Perfect Skiff builder.
As to great boat stuff for xmas, the DeWalt 677 planer is amazing. I set it
at its maximum depth (1/16) and ran it across the edge of a 2x4; like
butter!
After studying the tool at length, I've decided that this is the Daisy Red
Ryder BB Gun equilvalent for adults: I'm trying not to put my eye out.
This thing could hurt you quicker than any other tool I've got, even my
table saw. More later on how it works with plywood and on a mast.
Since it was too cold since thurs to use epoxy (I'm chicken at less than 70
degrees), I ended up boat waxing and motor painting on my Hydrasports center
console. This is my idea of hell (except I spray painted the bad spots on
the motor with no drips or run!), but its better to do it on a cold day than
in August.
And Mr. Bell, PLEASE keep us up to date on your IMB. We'll all learn
something from your experiences!

I just posted a PDF file of the CSD perfect skiff to the vault. This is
a pretty good description of the boat and is not all hype. I did make a
mistake as I stated that the skiff could be rowed at 4mph all day long,
3 is probably more like it. This was an editing mistake.
As a sailboat the skiff is not near as tender as I supposed. It stands
up to its sail area and one person can hold her on her feet it a 20knot
wind.
Plans should be available from PB&F. I think CSD used to charge $60.00
for them.

As a sailboat the skiff is not near as tender as I supposed. It stands
up to its sail area and one person can hold her on her feet it a 20knot
wind.
Plans should be available from PB&F. I think CSD used to charge $60.00
for them.
Seth:
The #2 Beach Cruiser Concept from the May 15, '98 MAIB is not the same boat,
but the main difference seems to be the sail plan. I scanned the drawing of
the "perfect skiff" from WB and put it in the vault as "bolgerskiff" in the
"Perfect Skiff" folder:
http://www.egroups.com/docvault/bolger/Perfect%20Skiff/bolgerskiff.gif
Between that and Robert Lundy's shot from the CSD newsletter:
http://www.egroups.com/docvault/bolger/Perfect%20Skiff/perfect_skiff.jpg
you can get an Idea what it looks like. Also the photo's are quite good.
For anyone who does not have back MAIB issues, here is the boat that Seth is
talking about:

So... anybody have more details (e.g. dimensions) on this design? Is it
any relation to the Beach Cruiser concept PCB&F displayed in the May
15, 1998 issue of Messing About in Boats? (I thought I read somewhere
that this "concept" was a precursor to the Perfect Skiff). Anybody else
sense the (perfect) irony that the Perfect Skiff is now virtually
unknown to lots of us (at least those of us without ready access to
back issues of WB)? Awaiting more news (or perhaps a post to the
vault??)
