[bolger] Re: RE:Boat stuff...

It's not nice to ask the price of presents! ;-)

Another good source for nice oars is Barkley Sound Oar and Paddle in British
Columbia. The oars for my dory are a pair of their laminated straight bladed
sitka spruce models (7.5'). They are very light and beautiful. They were
also a deal at ~US$70 for the pair. Leathers were a bit extra. Look for
their ads in WB or on the web.

If we can't talk about Jim's designs here, We'll just have to start another
forum, and that seems like a lot of trouble. I vote: go ahead.

My wife got me a pair of 7 1/2' Shaw and Tenney spoon blade oars with
leathers for Christmas! These are going to work perfectly for my almost
finished Light Dory.
By the way, my last boat built before the Dory was a Jim Michalak
Toto. This was my first stitch and glue boat and gave me the idea (and
the confidence) that the Light Dory could be easily built using the
stitch and glue method.
Also recieved two good books - Good Skiffs by Karl Stambaugh and The
Old Town Canoe Company:Our First Hundred Years by Susan Audette. I have
a 1913 Old Town canoe that I'll be starting restoration work on after
the Dory is out of the garage in the spring and once the Dovekie is
ready for the SWS Spring Cruise.

I've considered starting one (it would take about five minutes to
accomplish), but it seems a bit silly with all the kindred spirits here.

I welcome the occasional Michilak reference myself. Their definitely in
the same ball park.

No, but while visiting my brother yesterday I found a mostly working Delta
10" bench saw in his basement. He said he's got four table saws and didn't
need that one, so it's now sitting in my garage. The only thing wrong with
it that I can see is it is missing an oddball screw on the rip fence, but
otherwise it works fine for the light duty stuff I do. Having a professional
finish carpenter for a brother isn't all bad!

I'm going to clean up the workshop tomorrow. Once that project is done, I'll
start cutting out a few pieces of my next boat later in the week.

Does anybody care if I talk about my Michalak design here in the Bolger
forum? After all, it is certainly inspired by the work of PCB.
