Why do you say used cat's are out of the question.
Come to think of it, at least the newish looking ones
are pretty expesnive. The Tris are often going for a
song. But if you are building, that's what you want,
good resale.

10K of fixing up to go out 2 years. Maybe I

The Tennessee just can't be modified enough to live on

With all these stealth houseboats, what sort of rules
face them, or houseboats for that mater? Can one just
load one into the water, and chug down the ICW,
mooring them in backwaters?

I agree that 6' beam is pretty narrow. But, in general adding length
to a hull of a given midsection increases righting moment. Of course
its not all that simple since you have to factor in loaded
displacement and VCG. My suspicion is adding some length would not be
a big problem as long as you didn't double the LOA. There might be
some structural concerns on lengthening it too much, though.

That may work, but a 6' beam is tight for living on, just not enough elbow
room. I had actually thought of that myself, I wonder though about
stability by adding a 10' plug to a 6' beam.
Any Ideas?

Actually, the 1000 hours of build time is about 10 hours a week for two
years. My normal time spent boat building averages about 15 hours a week.
Usually 3 nights a week for a couple hours and about 8 or 9 hours per
weekend. It's a very satisfying hobby for me and I am somewhat experienced.
In fact if I'm not building something, I drive my wife crazy, or so she
says. My normal mode is to put in about 20 hours a week for a few months
then take several weeks off. I plan on spending my 8 weeks vacation
building over the next two years. My wife actually enjoys it some too and
helps out a fair amount. I think it could be built in 18 months, leaving
another 6 months minimum for shake out.
The biggest advantage of building for me, is the fact that I know how it's
put together, can repair anything on the boat and how to get to everything.
That is a big piece of mind for me anyway.
As far as the Jarcat, it has 7 frames including the transom. My 20' Frolic
had 6. Each frame is permanent for bulkheads. It's set up with the 7
bulkheads on a strongback. No fancy curves or arches except on the cabin
top. No ply twisting or strip planking.
We'll see, something will catch my eye by Dec. 1st which is my self imposed
deadline for a design.

I have looked at least on the web for used boats. Nothing looks like it
will work. If it's old enough to cost the same as building, then it needs
10K of fixing up to go out 2 years. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough but
there just doesn't seem to be much. Most power boats have huge motors and
are gas hogs, most sail boats have poor canvas or to deep of draft. Used
Cats are out of the question.
The Tennessee just can't be modified enough to live on full time. At least
not for us.

Actually, that is not a bad idea, Thomas. All one would really need is about two feet (half a sheet of ply) of shelf on special saw horses in a few strategic locations. Now add a vacuum cleaner suspended from the ceiling....

"If I had a dollar for every trip I have made up
and over the transom into the cabin then back out to
my work bench,
saws, etc., I would have enough $$$ to buy a good
cruising boat."
Good point. WB had an article years ago about some
hotshot Australian builder who insisted, against his
bosses objections, on building a whole raised floor
arround the the boat he was outfitting. He had all
his power tools etc... "dockside" so that he could
work the deal efficiently. After one has been through
it one understands the appeal.

| If you really want to take the trip, then I would

| tons of good boats out there, often for less than what
| the epoxy for a new one costs. Right up front, you
| know what someone will pay for them second hand, you
| don't get hit with the depreciation
Or just finish Tennessee with whatever modifications you need to make it
work.
I always liked the little Jarcat design, just because
the guy had the guts to make such a small cruising cat
design. I don't think I would want to build that way,
there just isn't any reason to build over all those
frames any more. It is arguably faster to strip plank
these days, for that mater. If you want decent speed
of assembly, try something like a Kurt Hughes, or a
Malcolm Tennant design. They have fast build hulls,
after that the process isn't all that different from
any other home build project. I would also recommend
Thomas Jones' book multihull voyaging, it gives a good
perspective on building boats for your dream voyage.
Multihulls can get complicated there are a lot of
skills involved in making them happen. The only
Bolgeresque designer is really Wharram. A guy willing
to specify funky basic stuff without all the
complications. His 38 footer might meet your needs.
I have the plans for his 30 footer, and accommodations
wise, we aren't in Wyoming any more.
Sounds like you have this all figured out (aside from
the design) but if you are planning to build a 1000 hr
boat non-stop right up to a deadline for taking two
years leave, I don't know how much fun that sounds
like. As you know 1000 hours is on full year of 40 hr
weeks. The problem with most of these big projects is
people just end up having had TOO MUCH, even 10 hrs a
week for 4 years would end up feeling pretty crushing.

Is it a "Constant Camber" boat? I'll have to look it up.
My heart would be set on Wyoming, the updated version that appeared in MAIB
recently. I got it bad for that boat! Were you thinking original or the aft
cabin version? Don't know that I'd want to get out on Lake Superior in one,
though. But it would be a fine ride down here on my N. Georgia lakes.

Oops! I thought we were talking constant camber.
They have a thirty two, that looks real nice, but
isn't comparable in any way to the size of Wyo.Tenn.

Just by cubing it up, the Wyoming could be 5 times
larger than the Tennessee. 27 vs 125. Other factors
to consider are weight comparisons, and the layout.
The inside of a Tennessee is pretty spartan, I don't
know about the Wyo. there ought to be enough room in
their for quite a lot of finish work to crop up.
Another concern I would have would be resale, I would
have thought the cat would find a wider audience. If
you are looking at a cat, consider a Kurt Hughes also.
I built one of his tris, and it was fun, fast to
build, and had more modern sections than you would get
out of CC (though the CC boats are nice to, I worked
on the one Wooden Boat put together, and they are a
little less fidly to make, except that the mold is a
big piece of tooling to invest in). After I had a few
hulls under the belt, one really could turn out a CM
Hughes hull in a week/20hrs minus glassing and deck.

Obviously going by Mr. Bolger's comments in his letter to me that must be
what he meant. (bare bones) He did mention that the floor is flat so the
use of "bargain store" cabinetry is in order and reduces building times
greatly.
I must re-evaluate..............there is no better teacher than
experience....and it seems there's plenty here. Thanks
The CC29 has been coming out on top on each approach. Such as, no it
doesn't motor fast, but it does sail fast. It's shorter so docking fees
will be less, but then it can't float on 5 inches of water back water
exploration.
What a quandary, as we all know, all boats are a compromise of something,
but picking which compromise, now that's the secret.
And by the way, for those of you that I've talked to in regards of designing
my own cruiser, I feel that for safety and sanity sake, I'm better off with
a professional design.

Jeff,
When Bolger says the Dakota can be "built to launch in two months", he
must be referring to the open skiff version with NO accomodation at
all--which is one of the options included with the plans. I am building Dakota.
Seehttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/bolger/files/Dakota/
I would say that after two months last summer I could have launched the
hull. I currently have 960 hours in the project and I anticipate nearly
that many more to finish. It is very gratifying to see how fast the work
with the big panels goes together. But then, as on all large boats. The
devil is in the details. If I had a dollar for every trip I have made up
and over the transom into the cabin then back out to my work bench,
saws, etc., I would have enough $$$ to buy a good cruising boat.
Don't get me wrong--I am enjoying every minute of it. But it is NOT an
instant boat. I am at the stage of figuring out the water tankage and
plumbing, the wiring for lights, pumps, electronics, etc., the steering
system, the battery banks and charging system, shore power, the toilet
and holding tank system, the galley--cooking, refrigerator (maybe), heat
for the cabin and the shower water. I have all the cabinetry, drawers,
lockers, berths, etc. done. But all must be sanded, filled, sanded and
painted, sanded and painted some more. The only things left on the
actual hull are the installation of the 20 plexiglass windows, the cabin
doors, and the cabin roof (the ceiling and roof beams are done).
See what I mean. 1000 hours? Figure at least double for the Dakota, and
Wyoming is another 14 feet longer yet!
Happy boat building.

You maybe right at that. The CC29 Catamaran can be put together in 1000
hours as they routinely have been in the past, but since no one has built a
Wyoming yet (per plans) I can only make a guess. With the ease that the
Tennessee assembles, I don't believe that's too far off. Mr. Bolger
indicated that "the Dakota could be built to launching in 2 months
uninterrupted work and the Wyoming would about twice the trouble". Now I
realize 4 months of hard work can get you 6 to 8 hundred hours down the road
to I figured a couple hundred more to get it "livable."
I'm not going to build a gold platter. Simply put, they'll be functional,
safe, but work boat in looks.
Pie in the sky dreams maybe so....

This is not meant in a negative way at all, and I am as guilty as the
next of wild flights of optimism. I think that building a Wyoming to
a "state" good enough to live on in a 1000 man hrs may be one of them.

The circumstances in question would preclude buying

Let's just say we have expanded our project greatly. This is not to say the
Tennessee is not a great boat. My wife and I have made arrangements to
embark on a 2 year leave of absence from our jobs starting in two years. We
have the finances, employer agreement, job security, etc. and will be able
to cruise for two years on the ICW and Great Lakes. The Tennessee comes up
short as a liveaboard. We are close to deciding on the boat we need. It's
now between the Wyoming and the CC29 Catamaran. Both need about 1000 hours
building time. We'll make a definitive decision by Thanksgiving.
I may store the Tennessee for years and get back to it, but if someone would
like it at a reasonable price, I'm open all offers.
We have plans for both and I'm researching needs, payload, etc.

Mr. Bolger.
Here is
why I am currently building a Tennessee instead of the
Idaho.

As designed the Idaho will be faster but use a lot
more fuel
where the
Tennessee is a displacement design to use minimal fuel
but
limited to 2x
hull speed at best. The Idaho will be more
sensitive to weight
as an boat with a flat run, where the Tennessee will
be more
forgiving with
a load. The Tennessee is about 10 inches wider
with a more
conventional lay
out for the cabin.

The Idaho has no rocker in the hull where the
Tennessee has
full rocker for
her draft. Though Phil Bolger claims both are
about equal in
handling rough
weather "to a point" ( what that means I'm
not sure), I have a
personal
belief that a bit of rocker is better anytime you have
sizable
waves.

So again, if you want speed and not concerned about
load
sensitivity, go
Idaho. If you want to be able to cruise and
speed isn't a big
issue, go
Tennessee as she can handle a bit more of a load and
not as
critical of
where it's placed. Also as noted before, because
of her rocker
the
Tennessee will handle better in tight quarters such as
marinas.
I.E.
tighter turning radius with less drift...
a load. The Tennessee is about 10 inches wider with a more
conventional lay
out for the cabin.
The Idaho has no rocker in the hull where the Tennessee has
full rocker for
her draft. Though Phil Bolger claims both are about equal in
handling rough
weather "to a point" ( what that means I'm not sure), I have a
personal
belief that a bit of rocker is better anytime you have sizable
waves.
So again, if you want speed and not concerned about load
sensitivity, go
Idaho. If you want to be able to cruise and speed isn't a big
issue, go
Tennessee as she can handle a bit more of a load and not as
critical of
where it's placed. Also as noted before, because of her rocker
the
Tennessee will handle better in tight quarters such as marinas.
I.E.
tighter turning radius with less drift...

...I did do a lot of research balancing
the pro's and con's between the Idaho and Tennessee. I have
plans for both
and have via snail mail gotten some information from Mr. Bolger.
Here is
why I am currently building a Tennessee instead of the Idaho.
As designed the Idaho will be faster but use a lot more fuel
where the
Tennessee is a displacement design to use minimal fuel but
limited to 2x
hull speed at best. The Idaho will be more sensitive to weight
distribution
as an boat with a flat run, where the Tennessee will be more
forgiving with
a load. The Tennessee is about 10 inches wider with a more
conventional lay
out for the cabin.

I have the plans for Tennessee, and while
circumstances would have to change for me to build
her, I was wondering whether anyone has applied the
shape of the newer bolger sharpies to this particular
design. Tennessee has the advantage of
accommodations, but the shape has apparently been
superceded.
The Sneakeasy shape is flat bottomed from the middle
to the transom, while Tenn. rises 5". The beam of
Sneak. decreases only 10% aft of it's maximum, while
Tenn. decreases 36%. Essentially Tenn is designed as
a displacement hull. Some of these changes would
ripple throughout the design, for instance increased
power might be required, with structural implications.
Applying these changes to the Tenn shape would,
however, be easy and I was just wondering whether it
has been done.

I don't know what the plans cost, but it's called the "Light Dory
Type V" and plans are available from Bolger. (The first version of
Bolger's dory was designed in the early 50s.)
In describing the design (see "Small Boats"), Bolger said he thought
the pointed stern would be easier to build than a tombstone transom.
The double-ended version has slightly more rocker in the bottom and
is deeper with less flare. Also, the midsection is moved aft, making
the lines of the bow sharper and the stern blunter, and the thwarts
are closer together.
Bolger hoped these changes would improve her ability to go against a
head sea, and make the forward rowing thwart more useful. He also
added positive bouyancy at the ends.
By the way, the original plans were in metric measurements. Don't
know if he's done them for feet and inches, but it's easy enough to
get a metric tape measure.

I understand that there is now a version of the GLD without the
sculling transom. Does this version have a particular name, and is
it under distribution or from Bolger himself? What do the plans cost.
