Re: [bolger] Re: Tablesaw recommendations

They do indeed, it is www.excalibur-tools.com

don't bother their transiting from an old site, and
neither seems to work.

Along with parallax, excalibur was one of the original
fence makers. It uses a ball bearing wheel sytem,
that is very light to move, and it is held down on
both ends, so that auxiliary stuff can be used on it.
They make a great guard, and a great precision saw.
All of these have been around for nearly 20 years, or
more for the saw. They are always rated very well in
the various tests. But there are a lot of good
designs out there. I like mine for all the reasons
above, and the micro drive is nice also.

Alternatively, excaliber is great for a small shop.
There are dozens of others of equal quality.

I had trouble with a Delta fence also. Not the
aluminum one, but the old jobs that grab the saw from
both ends.

In general reconditioned stuff can range from items that were
returned in new condition and resold as reconditioned. To trashed
out junk that was half-ass repaired, or anything in between.
Obviously a lot depends on who you are buying from.
Thanks for the link. I see they have the 744 new, and "reconditioned"
for $100 less. They have the "reconditioned" 746 but it says "Fence
guide rails not included". Doesn't the new one come with them? I
remember looking at "reconditioned" cameras at a camera store, and
not one worked right. What kind of flaws can one expect in
a "reconditioned" table saw?

One thing I'm concerned with on the table tops is the noise. We live
in an area where the house lots are 50 feet wide, and neighbors
aren't too keen on noise.

How does the noise level compare to a contractors saw with a belt
drive? If I'm using this in the basement, will it likely disturb the
wife upstairs?

How does it work on cutting say 1 1/2 inch strips out of 2x stock,
and then bevelling them? Is this saw accurate enough for this?

All reviews I've read are positive, except for cost, which approaches
low end contractors saws.

As for a tablesaw recommendation, I'd highly recommend the Dewalt 744.
I purchased mine a year and a half ago before starting my micro, and I'm
very pleased. Yes it's more than the low cost models, but it has an
excellent, rack and pinion fence that ALWAYS works great, and can cut up
to 25" wide, so if you need to, you can rip a sheet of plywood in half.
This model doesn't get discounted, but check Harbor Freight or some
other places for "rebuilt" ones, I saw one one time, and it looked brand
new.

As for not needing a table saw for boat building, yes, I could have
built my whole boat without it, but it makes MANY things much easier,
and I believe safer than doing all work with a skill saw (and faster
than a hand saw). On the subject, I bought a Porter Cable full size
7.25 left hand blade model skil saw, and am very happy with that as
well. Not the lightest, but strong, and with the blade brake, I think
very safe (well, as safe as any, I guess...).

Another thing about the 744 and one of the key reasons I chose to spend
this kind of money and not get a contractors saw, is that when the saw's
not in use, I'm just going to hang it on the wall, out of the way. I've
got a typcial small california 2 car garage, and need all the floor
space I can get.
