[bolger] August's inquiry

Dept. Easy way out:
There are quite a few pictures in MAIB, B.W.O.M etc. to seewhat these
boats look like in 3-D. MICROTRALER and CHAMPLAIN are not comparable
in any way except both being for plywood construction and outboard
power - one does in the high 20s with a 50HP HONDA while the other will
never go beyond 7 and moves happily and controllably at 6.5kn max with
9.9HP YAMAHa large prop four-stroke.
Proposal:
- Define your objective before investing time in models.
- Articles will give you as much preliminary info as possible short of
running one of them.
- If you want to build models, you'll need 'real' plans, i.e. an
investment of several hundreds of Dollars. Articles will save $$$.
- There is at least one MICROTRAWLER in the Northwest. Take a ride to
touch and talk, if invited...
- At this point nearest CHAMPLAIN is in Wisconsin.
- Are you aware of superlight and moderately fast BANTAM 16/20?
- Again, what do you want to do with the boat?
Writing yourself a well-defined wish-list will help you focus on the
essentials you'd like to see in your boat.
Examine and reexamine it before spending money on either us(plans) or
travel. Keep an eye on unexamined/unexplained preferences/prejudice
to 'clear the mind'.
After this you should have a better idea whether 'go
fast'(MICROTRAWLER) or 'go far'(CHAMPLAIN) is one of the options -
there are many more... This may be the most fun until you hit the water
as you can feast on imaginary boats and scenaria without penalty. Good
Luck!!
