Re: [bolger] Digest Number 676 - RE: Museums - Philly Seaport
Pete,
She's NOT just ' of TR's Great White Fleet'. She's the 'OLYMPIA' . . .
Dewey's FLAGSHIP that steamed into Manila Bay. As in, "You may fire when
ready, Gridley." Also she was the ship that brought home the 'Unknown
Solder' from WW I . There's a plaque on the foredeck where the casket
lay.
They've supposedly re-furbished her quite a bit since I made display
photos for the Sea Scouts that were part of her 'guardianship years ago.
I believe the sub is the 'Becuna', but I'm not sure.
ALSO . . . just this last week the battleship 'NEW JERSEY' has been
taken to her permanent berth across the river in Camden. I'm not sure,
but it would make logical sense to have the ferry that crosses the river
from the Museum (PA side) to the Aquarium (NJ side) stop there. (either
way I think she is within walking distance)

The Seaport Museum in Philadelphia is quite interesting. The current
name may be the Liberty Seaport Museum. It's right on the river. Next
to it are some historical ships, including one of Teddy Roosevelt's
Great White Fleet and a submarine.
