surf

i'm in the planning stages of building surf. i built teal and sailed
her all summer. i want something bigger, but want to use the same
sail. other than the several pics in the file section of this site,
does anyone know where i can see pics of surf?
thanks,
bob
Hi Peter,
Thanx for your input, I had seen the pictures of your boat, and was
so impressed that I went out and bought some red paint!
There are some cleats where you said, and I wondered if they had
anything to do with the sheets.
I think that I will go for a swinging lee board, It's like really
shallow at Whangateau, that day it was full tide (albeit a small one)
and we ran aground 4 times in one hour! I have averything I need to
do it except the time, I had some breakeges on my outrigger on
Sunday, and I will also need to fix them.

You are winding down, and we are winding up! Getting ready for what
looks like will be a great summer.
Go well,
Rique

Hello Rique,
Lucky you to be given a boat! I built and used my SURF
several(many) years ago and enjoyed her greatly. In anything but the
lightest and steadiest of winds,I always held the mainsheet in one
hand for instant control/release.A pair of regular sailing gloves took
the sting out of holding it all day long.
I also intalled two small cleats,P&S,on the outboard edge of
the aft deck right where the bulkhead meets the sides. These I would
use for the mainsheet when winds were light and steady.
My rudder was a kick-up type, while for the leeboard I chose to
attach the tongues with bolts and butterfly wing nuts. Also carried a
spare tongue to quickly replace the tongue that breaks when grounding
out at speed(it will be the forward tongue that breaks).I found this
arrangement much simpler then any type of swing up leeboard.
You can go to the "files" section and check under SURF for some
pictures of a beautiful one under construction and of another
sailing.Mine is the red one.......
Happy sailing!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, watching the leaves explode into rainbows of colour,
while contemplating a haul-out date for LESTAT before thr frost comes
to the shores of the mighty St.Lawrence........

Hi!
I have just been given a Bolger "surf" and I am wondering if anyone
out there has had some experiance with one. We took her out for a
sail the day we got it, there was almost no wind, and we ended up
rowing quite a lot. I usually sail my outrigger in a shallow estuary
that isn't a problem for her, but we managed to break the leeboard
mount even with no wind! So she is out of commission untill I make a
Michalak type arraingement. Also she didn't seem to have anything to
run the sheet to on the boat, Is one meant to just hold it without
any help? The guy that gave it to me has never sailed it, but said
that the guy that he got it from said that he sailed it all around
Auckland harbour and the inner gulf, but we don't know if he just had
a rope tied to the boom and held on to the other end.
I would love to hear from anyone that knows about this boat.

Go well,
Rique NZ
