Re: Teal, Surf, June Bug
Teal is basically an even more elegant Elegant Punt. More rocker than Surf
or JB, which are, in my opinion sharpie skiffs. With a light load they all
skim over the water very nicely. At least I assume so. JB is the only one of
this trio I actually have experience with. But judging by HHP's comments and
photos(Instant Boats) I think its a safe guess. JB will plane beautifully on
a dead run or broad reach. Gains noticeable speed and seems to laugh with
delight when you yank her leeboard up on a run. She is much less subject to
yawing than Gypsy. The trick is to keep the fore foot clear of the surface.
JB tacks easily with up to three adults aboard if weight is distributed so
her fore foot stays clear. She'll stall halfway through if too much weight
is forward. JB pounds frightfully close hauled in a stiff breeze. I
think(but could be wrong) Teal and Surf might be somewhat less bumpy to
windward than JB. I'm guessing external chine logs and flare might help in
that regard.
For her size/ weight/ performance I don't believe there's a more stable boat
on the planet than JB. Had mine out on the Bay of Fundy under oars this
evening. Four foot waves and 12-15 kts. Unbelievable exhilaration rowing
down wind, surfing down the waves while watching them approach over the
stern. VERY cool seasonal north westerlies. Would have hoisted sail if I
had caught the tide an hour earlier and remembered to bring a bailing bucket
and sponge.
jeb, hanging on to the bitter(special meaning here)end on the autumnal
shores of Fundy
