Re: JB jr
Oh, JewelBox jr. Thanks, I was wondering what that stood for.

I have a set of (unbuilt) JB Jr plans; it's 15' in length as opposed
to IMB's 13. I'll post a scan of it's page from the prototypes
catalog in Bolger2.
to IMB's 13. I'll post a scan of it's page from the prototypes
catalog in Bolger2.
Never heard of the JB jr. In his index he lists it, but no links.

Not to take anything away from PCB, but a similar desire to "start
smaller" with the Birdwatcher concept led Jim Michalak to design
several of his own versions. Take a look at: (by length ascending)

> Does anyone have any info or links for the Bolger Centennial? It is not clear from your post if you know anything at all about
Centennial, so I will start from the beginning.
The write-up about Centennial was in the Pilot issue of Small Boat
Journal and also in his book Different Boats. The boat is a 24'
double-ended flat-bottom boat, somehwhat like Teal in shape. The
topsides panels are 24", so she is pretty low sided for a 24' boat.
The sailing rig comprises a boomed sprit main of 178 sq ft, a
bermudan sprit mizzen of 50 sq ft, and two fixed leeboards (or bilge
keels) each ballasted with 110 lbs of lead. She has a small boxy
house, so it is possible to insinuate your lower half under the deck
and still sit up.
She was inspired by the dory Centennial that was rowed across the
Atlantic by one Alfred Johnson in 1986, for the Centennial. Bolger
thought that he had done quite a trick by designing a useful,
seagoing boat out of 11 sheets of plywood. It is worth noting that he
kept the amount of ply down by building the rudder, leeboards and
some other parts out of natural lumber where ply might be used.
At least a couple of boats were built to this plan, and at least one
made a quite ambitious voyage around quite a lot of the northeastern
US. The report is that they sail pretty well given a good breeze, but
are undercanvased in light airs. Even in the writeup, Bolger
describes some details in the rig that could use adjustment.
In my opinion, this boat has now been out-designed. Depending on your
intended use, you will probably be better off with a Long Micro,
Martha Jane, Micro, Seabird '86, or even an open boat plus a tent.
Long Micro is probably the most similar in investment and intent, and
her interior would be much, much roomier.

Actually, the JB jr. predates Jim's website, and did not get on it as it was not too popular. I don't think any were ever built, but you could probably still get a set of plans. It is basically an IMB with a flat (except for rocker) bottom, rather than multichine.

Does anyone have any info or links for the Bolger Centennial?
I ran across an old thread on rec.boats.building where someone
claimed they gave Bolger the idea for Birdwatcher, after recommending
he put a cabin on top of a model called Centennial.
I'm actually looking for a starter model for Birdwatcher. I figure I
should start with something smaller. The Windsprint hull looks
similiar, but rig is different.
I tried out my new Bosch 4000 table saw today, by cutting out the
staves for a birdsmouth mast mockup, 6 feet long to try out. Very
nice! Of course BW's mast is 20 something feet long. Would like to
make up a mast for a smaller boat, perhaps Teal?
Anyone have the link for Bolgers boats in books? I was looking at it
today, and now I can't remember the link. Must have inhaled too much
sawdust :)
