Re: [bolger] AF4 Grande

I'll excited to see them. Even though I just got my AF4 in the water...

A comment about the cockpit seats: We really like the seats in our AF4. The
cockpit does not feel cluttered at all. And I'd bet you'll and Jim will
agree when you try them. There is one issue with them I have found, though.
While the seating height is perfect for comfort and keeping the kids inside
the boat, they are a little low for the helmsman when the boat is on plane.
It is tough to see over the bow and directly ahead. Sitting on a floatation
cushion helps, but I find myself propped up against the aft bulkhead most of
the time. I'm thinking of building a folding perch or leaning thwart on the
bulkhead to sit on while motoring.

I'm running mine on a 7.5 hp Merc right now which is adequate. Somebody I
was talking to the other day was surprised at this, but she planes out
nicely at about 10-12 (I guess) mph with the 7.5. The bow rides a little
high at this speed, but I think it will level out some as we go faster. My
25 HP motor is in the shop recovering from the mouse eating it and my own
mechanical ineptitude. It's going to be interesting to see how she goes with
25 HP. I don't think anyone else has put that much power on this hull yet.
I'm guessing about 26 mph on smooth water. If she still rides bow high at
moderate speed, she may get some wedges on the transom.

| For those with an interest, plans for the enlarged
| version of jim Michalak's AF4 are now available.
|
| I am sitting here looking at plans set #1; 12 1/2 feet
| long, about 6 ft 6 in beam overall; 10 feet of cabin
| with 30 inches subdivided-off at the aft end for
| galley, head, etc. Planing hull, and at a suggested
| max. of 35 hp, this thing should fly.
|
| Looks like 5 sheets of 5/8" plywood and about 9 sheets
| of 3/8"
|
| The drawings show bench seats down each side of the cockpit,
| set-up to drain rain water out scuppers, meaning the
| only area of the boat that will not shed rain water
| is the center of the cockpit. Written specs suggest
| thinking hard before cluttering-up the cokpit with
| fixxed seating, however.
|
| Bottom is a single layer of ply with butt straps- much
| cheaper than trying to laminate two layers of ply, and
| much faster building, but I supposed you could if
| you wanted.
|
| Looks just like a scaled-up AF4.
|
| I like it.
