[bolger] Re: John Bell's plywood

At risk of repeating, I have been impressed with the ext 1/4 luan at Home
Depot. 5.2 mm, a little less than full 1/4, but really nice to work with.
I have had an unfinished scrap (with a surface knot) in my pickup through
two rains and a freeze, looks great. I also boiled/froze (in a freezer) a
scrap with no delam...

AFIK, the thinnest MDO 2 side is 3/8".

IMB needs 8 sheets 1/4" and 2 sheets of 1/2". I don't know that going to
3/8" is a good idea for this boat. The concern is adding weight up high and
reducing her stability.

If and when I build a Birdwatcher, I plan on using 3/8" MDO for the topsides
and bulkheads instead of the specified 1/4".

John,
I don't know the IMB design so don't know what thicknesses you need , but
the fir MDO here in the Opelika, AL area is looking better and better as a
choice. Only available in 1/2" here , but I think they make 3/8"; surely
the Atlanta area will have it in all it's available thicknesses. Look up
signs in the yellow pages. Atlanta's even lists one or two with web pages
(www.a1signs.com). they can at least say if it comes in thinner sheets.

I'm beginning to wonder if they don't use some other "secret" product we
don't yet know about for exterior sheet goods which might have boatbuilding
applications.
