Re: [bolger] re: Trailer for Topaz

Thanks, Shorty. Its a little light for my purpose.
Looks like a good deal for somebody, though.

I have a trailer that I am selling, originally bought it for a boat
building project but it is too big to roll into my side yard (would have
to cut a few trees down). I ended up purchasing a smaller trailer.

Not sure if it is big enough for your needs, it is rated for 2070 lbs,
has new tires and is galvenized.

Chuck used a similar trailer and modified it for his Caprice.

I am selling it for $289, let me know if you are interested. Next
Monday I am heading out on vacation for 2 weeks and won't be able to
talk over email during that time.

this spring (or maybe not--its a pretty tight fit,

If you follow the links, one of the California
Sneakeasies has a very nice looking trailer. You
might follow up on that, or use it as an example of
what you want.

Try a local welder. I had good luck with one that advertised in the yellow
pages they made trailers. I had them made up a trailer to fit my Chebacco
that tows like a dream -- we covered about 1300 highway miles this summer.

I had spoken before to a trailer salesman, but he kept telling me what I
wanted without listening to what I said I wanted.

Sam:

I have modified "standard" trailers to fit long plywood boats twice now. Once for my Tennessee, and recently for my Caprice. Each time, I was able to locate a used trailer of about the right load capacity. Each time I simply lengthened the tongue. I used a piece of regular 3" x 1/8" regular steel box beam welded as an extension to the old tongue. If I had a galvinized trailer, I might have used light "H" beam and had it dipped then bolted in place of the original tongue.

As an alternative, if you went to a small trailer manufacturer, they would probably do a custom job for you. Good luck!

Subject: [bolger] Trailer for Topaz

I will be pulling my Topaz out of the garage/shelter
this spring (or maybe not--its a pretty tight fit, I
may have to burn the house around her) and have
started looking for a trailer to hold her. She is 31'
long and about 6' max. beam at the waterline. Bolger
recommends a 3000# single axle trailer--I have had no
luck finding a single or double axle production
trailer anywhere near that light that will take her
length. I am afraid a heavily-sprung trailer will
shake her to pieces. Finding used trailers (better
than junk) to modify down here in the salt is tough or
worse. Any advice on how to buy/modify/fabricate a
trailer for Bolger's Topaz? Trailers for the "state"
series (Sneakeasy, Tennesee, Idaho, etc.)of sharpies
must have similar requirements. Any advice would be
appreciated.
