Re: [bolger] Trailer for topaz

Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions. Brad or
Chuck: when you lengthened your trailers, was any
reinforcing needed for the extra frame running aft or,
more problematically, for the much longer tongue? I
feel minimally competent to build a fifteen knot
cruising boat, but less so to construct a 55 knot
trailer. Thanks for the advice.

Sam, noted your problem and would suggest looking around for a light
wht. tandem. I found a good one for my topaz which I modified by
lengthening the frame and moving the wheels well aft. Must take the
corners wide like a trucker, but hauls down the road in great style. The
tandem does not pound the boat in the least due to the lighter
suspension. I put around 4000 mi. on it this last year. The one I
found has 13" wheels and torsion bar suspension. $700 plus $200 for
mods. I also have found a few tandems with 12" wheels which would work,
but may be pushing the weight limit somewhat. I have one of these 12"
tandems under another boat and love it. The side benifit with smaller
wheels is they require less depth for launching. Also there is a
company in ohio which sells 8 ply tires in the 13" range which really
makes the towing secure. Luck, Brad
Sam:

On the Tennessee trailer, I mounted a small bunk on the tongue about four feet aft of the bow, then strapped that (and the other bunks) to the boat. In effect, the boat supported the trailer. I pulled that boat thousands of miles that way.
