Re: [bolger] Books

Ah Hugo the quotes aside you are caught in a bit of an exchange of American culture from long ago. I have the same name as a very famous band leader and trumpet player from the 40's 50's. He was married to Betty Grable the best known pin up of WWII. Sorry for the very off topic trip.

My very fist memory in life was going in for a Tonsillectomy at the age of 5 and the nurse asking "where's your trumpet Harry", it was not the last time I heard that, pretty rare these days.

Yikes! Better copies of Folding Schooner starting at $90, Bolger Boats a hundred and a half. Whose to say they'll ever get it, but this makes me yearn for cheap, facsimile editions. Or put me in line for those e-books.

Sorry – but, shouldn’t this blatant, opportunistic commercial note be in Bolger for Sale?

While it may be seen as blowing my own horn, I have Small Boats, The
Folding Schooner and Different Boats on my eBay store
(www.allhandsaloft.com), and will be listing some Bolger plans in the
next few days. The books are priced below Abe's market level.
Apologies in advance if this is too crassly commercial; I'm unloading

If you use www.bookfinder.com it combines all the major book searches,
Abe, Alibris, Amazon etc. in one search. You can find all the Bolger
books there it is just a matter of how much do you want to spend. A
total for the four out of print ones (Small Boats, Folding Schooner, 30
Odd Boats and Different Boats) would set you back $220 if you got the
cheapest of each one and almost half a boat buck if you don't . BWOM,
Schorpien and 100 rigs are also available but you can get those new
elsewhere.

Hello group

I'd cordially invite anyone who has a couple of (your currency here) to rub
together to buy 103 Rigs, rather than read posted excerpts. The book is
still in print, available directly from Chez Bolger and (IMOO) a great read
and good value for money...

And no, I absolutely do not want to revive the whole 'property rights'
argument :)

Bolger calls for the fillers to be in the seats and it seems to be the only
place to put them in the design. Good, bad, or otherwise. Granted the
fumes can collect in the cockpit since they are heavier than air but will
eventually work their way out through the 16" x 3" drains.

Maybe I can build a fill box up to the top of the coaming that can be opened
to get access to the filler and will vent the fumes overboard while
capturing the overflow. This is basically what the USCG recommends along
with a anti-siphon on the vent.

Would it be possible to put the fuel fills on the outside of the boat
too?
Through the side deck or in the splash well, or beaver tails maybe.
Eventually you are going to spill some gas while filling or whatever,
and it would be nice if the spill happened outside the boat.

Looking at you photos I would suggest routing up through the
side decks between the coming(sp) and the side.

Where is "near Boston?" and where do you live? I live "near Boston"
(Bedford) so we may be neighbors.
At 6:00AM I gazed out at the unbelievable site on Klamath lake. My
little Rat-Shack indoor/outdoor temperature recording device showed a
temp of 29.4 degrees with the lowest of 29.0. The Icy north wind was
whipping the water fiercely but as the white caps formed they gave
off great clouds of mist from the lakes still high temperature. Other
towns not close to the lake were reporting teens and low 20's but
because of this warm mist we were a balmy ten degrees warmer. Upper
Klamath lake sits at 4,200 feet above sea level on the east side of
the Cascade mountain range so we are used to frigid weather.

At this particular section of Oregon the wind whips down the east
side of the mountains and we get awful temperatures of anywhere from -
5 below to a memorable -45 below. The only other place I have been
colder is flint Michigan one year working on a project and the
transmission and steering gear box of a crane we were using had to be
surrounded by road flares so we could unthawed the frozen lubricant
in them. Any skin exposure to the blowing wind produced frost bite.
So this banana belt on the shore of Klamath lake is almost like going
to Arizona, NOT! BTW it did snow last night but it melted from the
warm ground. In a couple of days it might not be the case.

This wild scenic report from GODS Country is must include a fishing
report and the red sides in the lake are moving to the mouth of the
williamson river. The average about 8 lbs with a few larger ones in
the 15LB range. The cold weather is bringing them in. To bad I'm too
stoved up to fish, but next year I'll make sure I have a supply of
smoked rainbows before winter. Kill your limit, never limit your
kill.

Hi Bruce,
The point of having all that is so that when you do re-locate
to another marina, you might be able to stick it out until ice-up!
Seriously,we don't usually start the haul-out foolishness until
thanksgiving weekend and we're just a little ways downstream BUT
further North then you.And to think of those wonderful cruising
grounds so close to you.........it's enough to make me cry in my beer!
Happy hunting for another marina!

Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, who will also be shutting down his boatshop in the
boonies real soon if the weather our Southern neighbours are
experiencing is any indication of things to come........Ho!Ho!ho!

Kingston, Ontario, on the shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence
River, no snow, but <SOB SOB> we hauled our boats out for the winter
last Friday, no autumn glory leaf houseboat cruise in the Thousand
Islands this year. What's the point in having a houseboat with
insulation and a propane furnace if you keep hauling every year in
Sept.?, and don't launch until May? I gotta find a more understanding
marina.

The leaves are just beginning to show a hint of colour, more of a
promise really. We haven't had our first frost yet. But the nights
are getting cooler by the day, won't be long. Work on Riff Raff the
Micro will grind to a halt soon as she'll be hauled outside to
survive the winter under wraps. I need her space for our busy fall
season. (Work rears it's ugly head yet again!)

TY for ideas. What else do you know about area?

I have fond memories of running into an "International Bagpipe
Festival" one fall, somewhere near North Hero I think.

We will be in a family compound of which I philosophically
disapprove, but am willing to use when offered by a close family
friend. I long ago decided it is better to know rich people than to
be one.

Are the leaves already turning up there?

If you're in South Hero and the weather is good, you might try
launching from the town beach (not sure if this is officially allowed,
but so what?) and taking a little trip to Carleton's Prize, a bizarre,
very small (100' or less LOA?), very tall (20' +?) island. It's the
tiny island between the two big ones. BUt there's plenty of other nice
places on the lake, including many more sheltered ones.

Iceboats anyone?

Polytarp sails on toboggans?

Oars on snowboards?
Wife and I are leaving on vacation for Vermont, where I will put my

No, that would be cruel! :>)

But, I did get my pair of 50 gallon fuel tanks yesterday to I do have some
things I can do during this "colder than normal" forcast.

Jeff
So I shouldn't mention that it's 87 degrees here now, and I have another 3
months before it gets too cold to go out without a jacket????

Your not alone Hal, here in Northern Colorado we hear tell that it's going
to snow a little tonight.

It's hard to get epoxy to set in cold weather so the Wyo building will be
slowing down.

I can attest to the fact that the books I recieved are in the finest
condition and are providing me with hours of enjoyment. I can say
with all honesty that Mr. Chamberland has better buys than any
bookstore I have ever purchased from. He is a truly kind man to let
these books go for so very little cost.

Hi All, A reminder that I still have many books likely to be of
interest to this site. I have posted an up to date revised list on
bolger2. Many of these books will go for little more than the cost of
postage.

I also have an almost complete set of Woodenboat. There are only one
or two issues missing. I have MAIB from the time Small Boat Journal
went to pot. Copies of WBJ are available. The magazines are free for
whomever wants to pick them up.

I endorse this recommendation
as www.abebooks.com, aka
"Advance Bood Exchange" is where
I have bought every one of my
old and out of print Phil Bolger
books, including most recently
a $60 [gulp] Different Boats.
It seems to be the internet
version of the wholesale used
book market.

My advice, is that before plunking
down the money, email the bookseller
to check if they still have the book
in stock, it seems that 25% of the time
they list a book, and then you find
out that they have already sold it.
For those who are looking to complete their Bolger Library, and have
surplus funds from some successful venture this summer, I just did a
search on his name athttp://www.abebooks.com/and came up with 31 hits.
All 5 of his design books are there including three, count them 3 copies
of the hard to find Different Boats. The down side is $60 to $100. There
is a copy of Folding Schooner for $20 though. And interesting result
from their search engine is you get a different return if you use Philip
Bolger and Philip C. Bolger.

This is far and away the most responses I have ever gotten on a search
for Bolger books. I may have stumbled across an obscure, and before now,
unknown economic indicator the Used Bolger Book For Sale Index. When
people start selling their copies of Bolger, it is a sign that things
are really bad no matter what the other economic indicators might say.

Now that the idea is out, you will probably be able to read the UBBFS
index in the Wall Street Journal, and unscrupulous day traders will
attempt to influence the stock market by buying and dumping Bolger
books.

Having made, and shared this discovery with you, I am now going for a
walk to see if there are any salmon left alive in the creek.

Herreshoff pram. This means reducing my library also. I have posted a

you are interested in any of these books let me know the title and I
will give you a description of the book condition and price. If you
can't load an Excel file let me know and I'll try to send you a
