Re: [bolger] Re: Micro rowing?

I haven't used a Yulloh, though I know a number of
folks who do use it, on for instance multihulls, which
have high wind resistance.

Rowing is pretty powerful, and doen't work all that
well when the boat has a high resistance to movement,
at least not in my experience (obviously lots of
rowers overcome this problem. The Yullow is an
oblique movement that uses power more economicaly, and
which you should be able to keep up against a head
wind, buth whether you move backwards or forwards is
another mater.

The India trick I don't know he was obviously using a
lot of muscles we don't have recourse to without a
sliding seat. I would suggest that it isn't something
to do when the waves pick up, since youu are just
standing on one leg.

A really interesting alternative might be one of those
bicycle drives. A number of people sell them, though
they are not any cheapper than a motor.

I would try sculling or a yulloh myself. Those seem
to be the prefered methods of moving large boats with
on person.

I did see an amazing thing on a National Geo. special
on Tigers, in which a guy was paddling a huge boat,
standing on deck manipulating a large padlle with both
arms, and one leg. Looked efficient when he did it.

Hi Jack I can't answer your first question however RD
Culler in his
book "Skiffs and Schooners" states that oars
are hardly ever long
enough. He specifies at least twice the beam and maybe
more. I have
been mulling over the idea of getting rid of the motor
hanging off the
back of my Cape Dory Typhoon and instead relying on a
sculling oar.
There were two articles in Small Boat Journal (45, 46,
Nov and Jan
1985) about sculling and the author maintained it was
easier than
rowing. This article is also on one of the small boat
websites but
I've forgotten which one. Perhaps someone can come up
with it.
Hi Jack I can't answer your first question however RD Culler in his
book "Skiffs and Schooners" states that oars are hardly ever long
enough. He specifies at least twice the beam and maybe more. I have
been mulling over the idea of getting rid of the motor hanging off the
back of my Cape Dory Typhoon and instead relying on a sculling oar.
There were two articles in Small Boat Journal (45, 46, Nov and Jan
1985) about sculling and the author maintained it was easier than
rowing. This article is also on one of the small boat websites but
I've forgotten which one. Perhaps someone can come up with it.
