Re: [bolger] Stainless Steel Deck Screws?
Hi David
Assuming they are the same sort of thing as we get here north of the border
(always questionable with the Orange Deposit) they're 304 stainless, not
'marine grade' 316. Being in a different part of the galvanic corrosion
tables they are less suitable than bronze for pinning lead (a la Micro
keel). Stainless without access to oxygen rots as fast as mild steel
apparently.
www.classicmarine.co.uk have a good page on metals in the marine
environment...
Me, I love 'em, and so far so good. Look for the ones with a cutting tooth
tip for the ultimate in no pilot-hole laziness.
Cheers
Derek

McFeely's athttp://www.mcfeelys.com/has had them for several years
now. How the price would compare to Home Depot I don't know as the
nearest HD is 550 Nautical miles away. Equally interesting, Mcfeely's
has stainless Steel Joist hangars, just the thing to quickly erect a
house using standard house building techniques on a couple of 3x5 Bolger
style box pontoons.
Mc Feely's sells Silicon Bronze screws also.

Not all stainless is created equal, either in strength
or corosion resistance. I have no idea how it would
work, but some of them are sintered, and "porous" and
rot out fast, from what I have heard. Is this true?

be the latest thing in DIY deck building -- square drive, stainless
steel screws. It would seem that these would make a readily
available, cheaper alternative to bronze screws.
Any reason not to use these?
