i would , and have used slightly thickened epoxy onthe ends of the
blades , not enough glue powder to discolour the finish.
The rest I would varnish . I have found that varnish over epoxy
sweated off on my hands when rowing. I use a mix of varnish + 5%
linseed oil + 5% turps for my first coat . It takes forever to dry
which is a good thing.

PS thanks for all the comments on epxoy V polyester, they were
ahuge help since I'm now going to use neither!. The transon annd
rudder are already Epoxy / 6oz glass as is the bowpost?, maybe one
more layer of glass on the bow.
I'm busy cleaning a pile of scrounged Baltic Pine floorboards for
some 'floorboards ' and side benches/ raisable decking cum beds,
Nice boards , they came from 2 old pubs built in 1906 and 1899.
The y replaced them with 'Treated radiata pine' Guess who got the
best deal!
Cheers Paul
I think it is any boat that arrives in the imagination
as a result of imitating or building on the designs
used in by Oystermen etc... in Chesy, or perhaps
southern florida.

I don't know whether I would epoxy the oars, but I
wouldn't woory obut it being advers. I have built
quite a lot of paddles with epoxy coatings, and no ill
results. Try a tough epoxy like System 3 if you have
a choice, rather than something excelent but hard like
WESY.

I think the ratio is 6 to 1 to qualify as a sharpie. Bolger uses
that reference often in his books describing the proper ratio.
Perhaps there is a range that qualifies!! i'm not sure. Flat bottom
is a given and I think moderate rocker may be more common.

How about a flat or nearly flat bottom, unstayed rig, good amount of
rocker with most of the curve in the middle, and a 4-to-1 or better
length to beam ratio, and 20 feet of length or better.

I thought it was just the flat bottom and rocker?

Just finished making one oar. Do I cover it in epoxy and then spar
varnish , or just spar varnish?
