RE: [bolger] Re: "MICRO"

Thanks tom
You got any pictures of that boat.
As far as exp I always think I can build any thing that I can see or
think of.
Right now I'm building a solar out house and a wind charger out in the
Oregon desert.

I don't know what your level of experience is, but it couldn't be
less than mine. Until I built my Micro, I had never built anything.
It took me longer than 300 hours because I had to spend time figuring
out how to read plans, which end of the saw to grab hold of, etc. but
with a little help from the Micro web sites and this discussion
group, I managed to make a boat. It's about 98% done and will get
wet in the Spring. Some people suggested I start with a smaller
boat, but I couldn't see any sense in building a boat I didn't really
want. I had to throw out my first bow transom and my first main
mast, but on the whole, I had no real trouble. (When you come to
putting the keel on, you find out who your real friends are.)

Thanks every one
I know you're all right my reasons for old shoe was not for building exp
because hey if you do something wrong just start again and keep it up
until you have it right after all until it's a boat its just a few
pieces of wood.
On other things like plans its clear we don't think alike on plans
resale I guess were all some right there to.
And yes I have some plans and some books I would sell or give away.
It seams to me that books should be read over and over if plans sold in
the numbers that books do well you see what I mean.

Will,
Whether to start with an OLDSHOE before doing a MICRO is a tough
question to answer. If you are seeking a roomy and steady daysailor
with only the occassional over-night stay in tents, then the OLD SHOE
would be more then adequate. She will prove relatively easy to trailer
and not tax either your wallet nor your abilities to build her
quickly.Depending on your ability/willingness to put up with
excitement,I would suggest prudence in heavy weather far from shore. If
you haven't done so already, you may wish to check out the Bolgerado
Banditos over at the Yahoo groups for the OLDSHOE......they can give
you the low-down on this wonderful little critter!
However,if you are seeking a greater amount of relative comfort
combined with a more extensive on-the-water cruising itinerary,then I
would go with the MICRO.She is capable of carrying a greater amount of
stores, provides a solid roof-over-your-head cabin with an almost
sinful amount of room for various activities/events etc... Just type
in the word MICRO into the search field, press "search",get comfortably
seated and check out the reports/reviews/praises and criticisms of the
"queen of the fleet".
As far as using the smaller Princess to practice on before going
for the Queen, there is not much point to this as both share a dirt
simple construction method. If you feel up to the Old SHOE,then you
certainly can be up for the MICRO.At least that is how I see things
with perfect hindsight but no OLD SHOE experience.
Either way,you will be rewarded with a remarkably able little
craft capable of providing you with hours of satisfying labour during
her construction and then untold hours of perhaps some of the most
sublime experiences a person can hope for in this lifetime.Good luck
with your choice and keep us posted!

for the Queen, from the dark and stormy shores of the ever-flowing

Why bother? Build the boat you want to go sailing in. Otherwise you'll
waste a lot of time and may never get to build it. Once you start, you'll
pick up any skills you need. (I don't know these designs very well myself,
but they look like if you can build one you can build the other.)

Just make that first cut, and you've done the hardest part.

Although I haven't built a Micro or an Oldshoe My current boat a
Sneakeasy is the largest of the 7 boats I have built. I'm finding it
no harder to build than the smaller dinghys or the 23 ft schooner.
Maybe experience has some small part to play but I have discovered
the process is the same, always rewarding. My opinion is that you
should build the larger Micro because the process is the same with
perhaps a little more time and material. You will be happier with
the versatility of the Micro, as Peter pointed out. Don't
underestimate the recommendation of the King of Micro owners. I
suspect he has used his Micro as much or more than other Micro
owner, in all conditions , and, I'm just guessing now, but I think he
appreciates it more each time he sails it!!
