Re: [bolger] Re: spanish cedar?

To follow this line, what is Aromatic Cedar. Is it the same thing as western red? This is all the local lumber companies carry.

Rick, your welcome. You say it has a lot of pitch in it? This sounds
closer to the western red than the atlantic white and might be a
little heavier but should be much more resistant to rot.

Andy
Thanks Tom and Andy,It is not luthier grade wood. This stuff is random
width 1x S2S and retails around here for about $4 a bdft. There is
enough clear vertical grain to make frames and enough clear flatsawn
to make battens. I have worked with it a littlle bit before, I used
it once a dozen years ago to reline a steamer trunk for a customer.
Most of what it is used for these days seems to be Cigar humidors.
The density and grain is more akin to an atlantic(eastern)white
cedar, I havent weighed a bdft sample but I suspect the spanish cedar
is slightly heavier than Atlantic cedar. The spanish cedar has a lot
of pitch in it and working the stuff without a mask will give you a
sore throat. I will probaly take the stuff and what I can't use on
the boat will end up as a cedar closet in someone's house.

Rick
Rick, cedar has a number of sub species; western red, white, spanish,
etc. Western Red is known for its resistance to rot, white is not so
good but still better than many other woods. Not sure about Spanish
but I believe all cedar is very light and if you are epoxing your boat
the rot is not going to be an issue. Sounds, to me like you should
grab the wood.

Andy
If it is very good quality it is also good for Flameco
guitar necks, and the conversion rate is about one
half sheet of quality 1/4" marine ply per 1x3x21"
blank of spanish cedar. If I were one of you I would
try to sell it on ebay to luthiers. It is strong, the
good stuff anyway, but for frames and clamps the
structure in terms of nocking about, and taking screws
etc... is more important that the structural strength,
which is most situations, onece the boat is assembled,
could be replaced with an equal volume of foam.
