Re: [bolger] Wharrams/masts/folding schooner progress

I think Alloy rigs are pretty common on Wharrams,
particularly the earlier designs, before he came up
with his areo luff pocket design, or whatever one
would call it, which is now a distictive signature.

In a lot of places it is a myth that a really clever
rig designed to be cheap is cheapper. Sometime you
inherit one. The smaller cats run nicely on beach
rigs for instance. I talked to a sialmaker who had
done sails for a cleverly designed minimalist rig on a
Newick tri. He said the whole thing was astonishingly
expensive, since it involved a lot of R&D to get it to
run well. This rig was tallish, and unstayed, so
there was a lot of bend, even with truckloads of
Carbon fiber. So the sails had to be recut several
times to get the right results with the custom mast.

Paul, you will find run down boats all over and it does not always
mean the boat was a bad design. There was a boat that layed around my
club for years rotting, the design was called a Ham Boat and was of
the Star generation. Long narrow but like a Star had a flat
bottom(not hard shine though). This boat was faster than a scalled
cat in its day. Not sure how it came to be a ruin.

Talk to you later

Ive only ever seen 2 wharrams. a21 and a26 , both rotting on
moorings with over sized and tall alloy rigs fitted, which seems a
contradiction to earlier threads , maybe the owner finally got there
faster but got scared in the process!
Ive a june bug mast here single piece of old douglas fir, all the
right tapers, no glass , just varnish and an oversized sail, and it
never looks like breaking because the boat is narrow and heels easily.
The 3" dia folding schooner masts are laminated from 2x4's and
varnished with a bit of tape at the partner. Cross my fingers with
them . wood was second hand and cost $40aus for the foremast and $20
aus for the main. Hopefully a bargain.
the folding schooner is progressing again , I'm fairing the forard
hull for painting and only one sheet of ply left to buyto complete
the aft hull.
All my decking is finished . A great stretch of varnished Baltic
Pine running from bow to stern looks great and is very springy to
walk on. sorry no photos . we've got so many rolls of film to
develop. its now a tossup between that and a sheet of ply!
Gota go Cheers Paul
