Good heavens! What are the neighbors complaining about?

Back to USCG regs - I rec'd MAIB Vol. 19, no. 14 yesterday. At p. 25 Jim
Betts indicates that he supplies the layout for a USCG "Maximum Capacities"
label with each of his designs. He states that "(he is) the only person to do
it". Guess I'm flogging a dead horse here. Has anyone known to the group ever
run afoul of the authorities for want of this label on a homebuilt boat?

A 25hp long-shaft OB was Bolger's maximum power recommendation. I would guess
that a 9-10hp motor would provide pretty satisfactory performance. I was
mainly trying to stir up a bit of controversy regarding the U.S.C.G. regs.
and used "Diablo" as a handy example. Apparently no one is biting.

Bill,
If you are to build a Diablo and hang a 35 hp motor on it, I
suggest the following:
1. wear a helmet
2. mouthguard
3. take out a life insurance policy
4. Kiss your wife or significant other goodbye prior to opening the
throttle wide open.

As the proud owner of a Diablo, I can attest that small hp 10-15hp
suit her fine. I have never had any complaints from my passengers,
but plenty from neighbors around the lakes!

Happy Boating

I think Bolger was just being true to his design philosophy. 25 hp is
all Diablo needs and he would probably be aestheticly offended if
someone hung a lot of unnecessary horsepower on the transom making the
boat less efficient and more expensive.
