Re: sacrifical anode corrosion control

A sacrificial anode will generally not be of much help on a trailer
due to the rubber wheels and the way most of us block up the front on
a block of wood when the trailler isn't moving. Effectiveness would
rise if a chain or grounding strap was in contact with the earth most
of the time. This is now illegal in most states and provinces while
underway.

Then the question of exactly where to mount it comes up. Placed
poorly it can be ineffective, or even counter effective. Don't forget
to grind away the paint behind it so that the anode is in contact
with the steel.

A better propsition is to treat the trailler and it's electrics with
Rust Check (see my biz site at www.rustcheckkingston.com). If you
can't get Rust Check, and its pretty hard to find anywhere except in
Canada, get a couple of cans of our marine formula "Corrosion Block"
available from West Marine's catalogue. It costs a bit more but has a
higher di-elctic (resistance) and will provide excellent protection
from corrosion of all types, including dissimilar metal corrosion and
verdigris, the green fuzzy corrosion on electrical terminals. Next
choice is TKX, a penetrating fluid based corrosion inhibitor made in
the states. In surface rust tests it does almost as well as Rust
Check.

If you need more info on corrosion follow the link off my biz site to
the "Corrosion Doctor" site maintained by the Chemical Engineering
Dept. of Canada's Royal Military College (our rough equivalent to
West Point) where you'll learn far more than you ever wanted to know.

Barring these methods, always rinse your trailler with copious
amounts of fresh water after use and store it with enough slope that
she'll drain well and dry out.

I'm told that it is very convenient to leave the trailer attached to the
bottom of the boat at all times. Makes removal from the water a lot
easier, and you don't have to worry about finding a place to park the
trailer when you're out on a busy day. Unfortunately, it's puts a bit
of a damper on performance....

Galvanic action is not the problem with trailers. Don't bother with anodes.

The biggest concern is plain old rust. Galvanizing is the best protection
for that, but even if your trailer is homebuilt, it's not really necessary
to have it galvanized. I have an ungalvanized trailer that goes into the
sea regularly, and I hose it down after each trip. The builder said I could
count on 10 years anyway, and if I look after it (hosing down), it should
last a lot longer. I dare say it will rust eventually -- hard to rinse
inside the frame. My light bulbs go out now and then, since I submerge the
whole thing to the top of the fenders every time -- you might consider a
separate, removable board for the lights to avoid corrosion on the
connections. (I'm not going to bother, myself, I just carry spare bulbs.)

You didn't mention bearings, but you should install "Bearing Buddies" to
keep the bearings greased and water free. Every holiday trip I see at least
one trailer at the side of the road -- I never relax completely until I've
seen it, and can tell myself its not my turn this trip!
