Re: Lake Champlain Messabout 2002

On the NY side your best choice is Westport, they have a nice marina
(westport marina) and also a free public boat launch. I beleave that
is exit 32 or 33 of the adriondack northway (I-87) another town is
Whitehall NY (exit 19) at the southern end of Lake Champlain and the
end of the Champlain Canal, 3 marina's and I think there is a public
launch near there too. Westport is more *polished* than
Whitehall.Whitehall would probaly be cheaper for accomdations and
meals.

Hi David,
Whadayamean"if(you) bring MICRO"? Surely by then you'll be
finished and just be itchin' to show her off,no? :-D
I agree that Kingsland Bay was nice but.......In my minds eye I
see something more structured like perhaps a marina or club that would
not mind playing host to a bunch of boatbums. There would be a nice
launching ramp on the premises, toilette facilities, picnic area and/or
a half decent dining room available. Also, some available space along a
quay for boats to tie to. All most like a mini boatshow of sorts.
Up here they have this thing called L'association des amateur de
bateau bois du Quebec which is a loosely structured province wide
association for amateur boat builders(I guess the title already said
that) and they hold an annual get together in different locations
throughout the province.Inevitably, there is always a member who knows
somebody who is already a member at some marina or yacht club and
through these people, arrangements are made for that club/marina to
host the event. As far as I know,no money changes hands and the
club/facility benefits through; 1) slight increase in the sale of
beer, booze and food.2) Fun type activity for its members to be
entertained from.3) Slightly increased visiblity for the club(free
publicity) along with the possibility of attracting new members.
This practice has apparently been rather successful as they now
have a number of places throughout the region that takes turns hosting
the event.Having been invited to a number of these gatherings I can
only say that folks seem to have a good time, the club/marina folks get
a kick out of it and town folk have something to do that
weekend.Really a win, win, win situation!Part of the success also has to
do with the timing of the whole event.Usually by the end of July or
early August alot of boaters are away on holidays/cruises and thus the
marinas/yacht have spaces available.
Now,if we could get a Bolgerado who may have connections in a
club etc....then we'd be cookin'!!
I would be happy to give my club a try but then again we would
all suffer from:polluted water, strong currents, lack of camping space
etc.....Although the cultural difference may prove interesting, not to
mention the exchange rate.In the end,it is perhaps just too far for
most Bolgerados to bother with especially if it means giving up the
glorious natural surroundings available on Lake Champlain.
Sorry I cannot come up with a neat acronym other then
LA-CHAMPMESS or maybe something different like B.A.G (Bolger
Appreciation Gathering)
Also, sorry to here that my friends to the south of me are already
getting snow.....lots of it too!! Things are strangely green up here
despite the cold.Maybe it has to do with that global warming stuff?
I've always wondered how palm trees would look along the
St.Lawrence.......mighty fine,me thinks!!!!!!!!!

Continued success with your Micro FIREFLY !
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, seeking heated shelter, along the shores of the
St.Lawrence.................

LaChaBoBoMessToo? :o)

Seriously, I'm looking into finding a venue on the NY side of the
lake, if that's okay with potential participants. I thought that the
High Peaks region of the Adirondacks would be sufficiently
picturesque, and far enough north, to be acceptable to most. The New
York Northway, I-87, provides better road access to the area than the
eastern, Vermont, shore. Any thoughts?

Hi David
I'm glad to see this thread about the Lake Champlain Messabout. I
have recently e-mailed Peter Lenihan if there would be another this
coming year. He assured me there would be but the date is not set
yet! Are you involved in the planning as well? I plan to bring my
Sneakeasy, which will be completed by spring. I'm in Maine and
having not been to a Messabout yet. I am eagerly looking forward to
it! I agree with your comments about facilities.

I agree, the site was beautiful and the beach and ancorage secluded
but also a bit primitive in the facilities line. Isn't there a state
park on Lake Champlain with camping and a boat launch? Barring that,
perhaps a waterfront motel or private campground would work well also.

Elaine and I hope to be there with our new Micro "Riff-Raff" if we
ever get it launched, if not we bring "Diabla" with a newer motor.

Well, with the first snowstorm approaching, it is obviously time to
start thinking about the Lake Champlain Bolger Boat Messabout (there
has to be a niftly anacronym for this) Kingsland Bay was certainly
beautiful, but there has got to be a place that is better for
launching and retrieving boats. If I bring Micro, I would love to
launch right at the site.
