RE: [bolger] Depoe Bay Instant Boat Corner, April 27 & 28

Hi John
I kike Depoe Bay a lot the smallest boat harbor in the world.
I have never been to the Wooden Boat Festival there but I will in April
is it I would love to see Instant Boat Corner there.
Right now I am not far from there in the coast range mts its rained 60
days straight now and the rainy season is just starting.
When it dries out some I think I will build some kind or boat.

There not having been a response as yet, I thought I would re-post
Jamie's suggestion about organizing an 'Instant Boat Corner' at the
Depoe Bay Wooden Boat Festival and Crab Feed the last weekend in
April. Any interest?

Hi Group,

We (Jamie and John) got to talking about the Depoe Bay boat show,
down in Oregon. (Well, down from here, anyway!) How about making up
an Instant Boat corner there? There's John's Surf, I've got an
Elegant Punt, Pat down in Oregon had one there last year, I think
Larry B's got a Nymph? And there's got to be a bunch more out
there. So who's interested? Lot's of time to build an Instant Boat
between now and April!

Cheers,

Jamie Orr

Hi, Peter
Thanks for your thoughts and memories. I sure look forward to getting
SAMA-J rigged and learning about sailing her. My decision to build a
Surf was certainly influenced by what I saw of yours in the Files.
What's wierd is that I, too, somehow built in a small twist. (That's
the main thing I *wasn't* pointing out to you, Jamie!) Damned if I
can figure out how it happened but at least it seems not to have had
any effect on performance even under oars.

John,
Sorry to hear about your camera misfortunes.Happily, the photos
showing your construction were not similarly cursed!
Looking over your photo sequence of the building of your SURF
brought back fond memories for me of when I built mine.I was not as
blessed to have such a wonderful work shop as you and had to build my
boat in a number of different locations, hauling it around half built
on a set of skis during the winter and baby carrage wheels during the
summer. What a sad sight for the neighbors to see!
Anyway, despite these particular challenges and the fact that I had
somehow built a small twist into the hull(could only be seen by
sighting over the transom toward the front of the boat),that boat
provided some fine sailing adventures! It was also my first time
experiencing the sprit-boom rig so favoured by our HERO.I lost count
of the number of times this rig saved my sorry ass from getting into
some serious trouble out on the St.Lawrence River, especially on those
sort of days that start out with light winds that somehow begin to
blow like mad later in the day!
Because of where I sail( steady current and just above the Lachine
Rapids) I did not always have the easy option of just going anywhere
the wind howled and thus was often forced to use this rigs built-in
safety device.........the ability to let the sail luff completely
forward of the mast.Great method for relieving some stress and
frustrating the winds force! Sure, the mast took on some rather elegant
curves and I almost broached her a few times but! no harm ever came my
way and through almost daily use, this boat taught me alot about
sailing.
She will shine in the lighter stuff and hopefully take you to
places off limits to bigger boats. With a set of oars for auxiliary
propulsion and a mast light enough to pop out with one hand, there must
be hundreds of out-of-the-way-hard-to-reach places for you to explore
in tranquility with only the sounds of cicadas buzzing away in the
tree tops as you round another bend almost lost in the heat haze of
some secret place.........
Congratulations on a fine job of boatbuilding and many happy sails
John!!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, glad to have not yet lost his memory, from the shores of
the St.Lawrence....................

P.S. You can see my SURF in the files section.......it's the red one.
Jamie, thanks for the kind words. I chose the Surf as my first 'go' because
it seemed to match my perceived needs with my perceived abilities. Plus, for
an 'Instant Boat', it offered a certain flair, an opportunity/excuse to
tiddly it up a bit.
You requested that I post pics. Unfortunately, although I did take
launch photos, I later dropped that (disposable, thank goodness) camera into
the briney deep (well, deep enough) while recording the extended dock. I
have just sent a later roll off to PhotoWorks; in the meantime, you (and
all) can try this link for some construction shots from last summer.

Hi Group,

I had a look at John Ewing's Surf this weekend -- beautiful job there, John.
I'd never seen a Surf before, and hadn't really taken to the drawings in the
book, but "in the wood" I liked it a lot. John let me take it for a quick
row, and I found it was responsive, stable, with lots of room and moved
easily. John's also made some improvements in fitting it out. Forgot my
camera, but maybe John will post a picture or two?

We also got to talking about the Depoe Bay boat show, down in Oregon.
