Re: Cartopable

I put a 3 hp Cruise & Carry OB on my own (Now stolen and sorely
missed) Two Bits once. The experience was scary. I would suggest about
2 hp max,

Miles cheaper than an inflatable would be a Brick made with 3/8" ply
and slathered with thickened epoxy fillets. Not fast, but able. I
believe it's second load line is around a 1000 pounds.

Junebug would still do.

Thanks to all of you. I think I'll tell my friend to buy an
inflatable and a small motor. I'll keep on reading until I decide
what to build for myself. BTW, 25 years ago I bought a set of plans
from Danny Greene and built his "two bits". Marvelous. Perhaps a
nesting dinghy would be the appropiated boat for my friend.

And a small motor, 4 hp max.

A friend of mine claims to have done it with my
Elegant Plunt, "Toad"
3 Men, 3 Shot Guns, 1 Dog a bunch of duck decoys.
I don't know how much beer. Seems like "Enough"
They lunched onto ice and then into the water when
they pushed it far enough out that they broke through the ice.
I wouldn't recommend an "Elegant Punt", but I guess it would do.
I was so scarred after hearing his story that I built him
a larger boat, with Ice runners on the bottom.
Heck, I almost lost my "Toad".

Pat.

I used 160 lbs per adult, which I believe is the value airlines
assign for each passenger for weight and balance calculations. Also,
I recall the Coast Guard's calulations use a number in that range as
well. The numbers are a guideline, that's all.

In choosing a boat it always good to consider what you plan to carry
with you. For instance, my Blackberry row boat is designed for about
400 lbs maximum safe displacement. Assuming the boat weighs about 60
lbs, don't plan on carrying a passenger if one of you weighs 280.
However, if you're only 160 lbs, then another similarly sized
passenger is possible.

For the record, my family not including the dog (because I hate
boating with him and him with us) weighs in at 440 lbs. The dog would
take us over 500 lbs. But two of us are less than 5 years old so our
wieght is increasing with our food bill! Fatherly bragging: you can
see my little blonde eating machines on the front page of Jim
Michalak's December 1 essay.

You must have a thin family and a tiny dog.
Exactly the reason I asked. We had one of the Yamahas as the auxiliary on
a 23-foot Precision, and I remember the couple of times I had to get the
thing off the motor mount and up onto the dock for servicing, and taking it
off and on at the beginning and end of each season. Actually, the scary
part was lowering it back down!

What you describe is a pretty tall order for a car top boat. Carrying
the 4 adults and dog, you are looking at a payload of around 700 lbs,
plus another 100-120 lbs for the motor. That means you'll need pretty
big boat. For instance, my 18 foot by 5 foot Michalak AF4 feels
pretty maxed out with 1000 lbs of people and motor aboard. And it is
not cartoppable by any one's definition.

Why the aversion to trailering? Once a boat gets heavier than 75 lbs
or so, trailering is actually easier. And for most circumstances 100
lbs is the maximum you'd actually want on the roof.

One idea that might make a large enough boat for your purposes
managable is a demountable catamaran. At least that way you coul
break up the weights of the peices you have to load on the roof to
something less cumbersome. I'm not aware of any degigns of PCB's that
fit that description however.

Excellant question! I had a 4 stroke Yamaha 9.9 and it weighed a ton! Not
literally but it felt like it the one time I carried it by hand!

I'd rethink either the HP requirement, the 4 stroke vs. 2 stroke decision,
or both if he intends to use the boat often.

I'd suggest his "Cartopper" or "Junebug", with the latter having the
edge on stability and room. Of course Cartopper has the edge in
style, grace and seakeeping.

With three friends, a dog nad a box of beer I'd favour the extra
stability in Junebug and stick to protected waters.

Plans for both are avaible from the "Instant Boats" site of Dynamite
Payson.
