Re: Bolger and Guns
There's also a reference in a piece called "The Singlehander",
(I think that's the title), in a back issue of Wooden Boat. It's a
group of "stories" about different designs and includes the
same "Micro" story that's in BWAOM.
In the "Singlehander" story, PCB has a single woman, cruising
alone, armed with a Ruger .357 magnum revolver.
I agree with you David, that this isn't the forum to debate the
pros and cons of firearms ownership. The question was asked regarding
PCB and firearms. You've posted one of two references I know of and I
put up the other.

Chapter 55 in BWOM deals with a miniature steel tug boat to be used
as a workboat in Washington. Part of the design premiss is to beat
the boat tax in WA. by making the tug 15'11".
In his response, Bolger reminds the commissioner that "revenuers...
[have a]... habit of changing the rules in the middle of the game; I
can see them thinking it clever to lower the limit to 15 feet next
year. In making a "neighbor gun" a few years ago, I cut down the
barrel of an old shotgun gun to 20 inches instead of the legal 18
inches as a precaution against that attitude."
I offer this not to re-ignite any guns debate on the list. Rather I
suggest (in good humor) that Bolger's writing on the art and science
of boat design is "Torahesque" and that within his books and essays
there are opinions on nearly everything; and that we here are
"talmudic scholars" of the masters words.
Occasionally a boat gets built too. ;-)
