Re: Bruce....Hello from Ottawa
Don't worry about a Micro Trawler or Retriever on either the Rideau
or the Ottawa Rivers, both will handle most any swell or wake you'll
encounter there.
However, I do remember one day on the wide part of the Ottawa River
between Montebello and Hawkesbury where the wind was blowing 40 kph
right up the river and the waves must have been over 4 feet, they
were crashing over my motorcycle and then impacting on the front
windows of my houseboat. Quite exciting and each crash felt like the
glass was going to go. The old scow rolled through 50 degrees when I
put her about, but she made it with only one broken dish. Running
with the wind it was much smoother. The crew was a bit nervous so we
put into a small town on the Quebec side and tied up at the town dock
for a few hours. Good trip that. We went down to Montreal and then up
the St. Lawrence Seaway to return to Kingston.
I cooked in the McNaughton Mens Mess in 1977-78 and at RMC 1980.
Good luck on your project. Have you decided on an MT or the Retriever
yet? If you have a layout of Retreiver please post it to files or
photos here or on Bolger2. I, and I'm sure lots of the group too,
would love to see her in more detail.

Bruce,
Seeing that your building a sneakeasy for your sister you might as
well build one for me.....jokes aside I'm thinking of building a
MicroTrawler for the Ottawa area.... The Retriever is closer in size
to what I want and need....i.e. enclosed head, galley...... OPP not
seizing your life because you have a beer on board.... Not too sure
how it will do on the canal....or the Ottawa river; though...It can be
a little rough....
BTW when where you working at CFB Kingston. I was at CFSCE as an
instructer for five misirable years. We may have talked.....
Cheers
