You're dead right Peter. The only differences are the rig, the extended
bow (to a point) and the slightly extended dog-house. From their
diagram, there are even the same number of shelves next to the head, the
cockpit has exactly the same slope (I know, cos mine was built without
it, grrr), double berth's the same shape, identical bulkheads etc etc.

Jim Michalak also freely acknowledges Bolger's work as the inspiration for
some of his work. My own dory was designed by Jim to incorporate some
"improvements" to the PCB's venerable Gull. Jim clearly states this in his
promotional material. Is my boat an improvement over the Gull? I can't say
for certain without ever having been in a Gull. My boat may not be as
classically attractive as Gull, but it darn sure works well. It also offers
(theoretically*) simpler construction than PCB's boat, which was one of my
major incentives for building it.

My point is that Jim's work is his own. Where he takes inspiration from
others, it is properly attributed, whether it's from PCB or the stacks of
aluminum jon boats outside Wal-Mart.

* "Theoretically" - the idea that stitch and glue is easier is so popular
that my judgment may be clouded. I've never built a boat where you had to
line up the forms on a strongback before assembly. The extra work in
building the ladder frame may not be any worse than grinding down epoxified
seams. Who knows? It can't be that much worse! Maybe one day I'll find
out...
Clyde,

Yes, it is, but I do believe a certain N.A. put the polish on it, as he had
done something very similar before.

Mine is a bigger cat-ketch (44'), at least as far as Freedom is concerned.

Chuck seems to make an excellent point overall about "borrowing" that would
be good to keep in mind. One of the nice things about Bolger is that, in
his published designs, if he did get an idea from another boat, he tells you
how, why, where, etc. I use Birdwatcher and Jim Michalak as an example-he
took the "slot-top" concept into all sorts of boats including powerboats and
boats without glass cabins.

If you've ever seen a Peep Hen, it looks an incredible amount like a Micro
copy with pointed bow (so it could be sold at boat shows). This sort of
thing has gone on for time immemorial right up to the "look and feel"
lawsuit Apple eventually lost. Don't know if there's much you can do about
it, ecept to do as PCB's done and keep coming up with original ideas.

Gregg, Your Freedom is Gary Hoyt's design isn't it? I may not have spelled the name right. I've always admired the small ketches. Clyde Wisner

Maybe it's my bias to my Freedom, but I've talked to and been thoroughly
impressed by Tanton for a long time - he has some really, really unique big
cruisers. He wouldn't appear to need to knock anyone off, so it would be

The main difference from Bolgers original plan is the use of colour!
