Re: [bolger] Don't look down.....Take 3
It only got used in springtime, during Herring Season.
You know, "When its springtime in Alaska, look out below".

I'm pretty sure this is what Rabl describes in his book. A countinuously
flushing toilet.

For the bashful, how about a bottomless head: a well, not unlike an
outboard motor well, with an appropriate seat on top, and enclosed in a
closet. This would work better with 'sinkers'.
Chuck
| It is legal
| (apparently) to pee or take a dump directly into the lake, however. But

| Go figure.

Then presumably mounting a toilet seat over side the taffrail (akin to
the
"seat of ease" in Jack Aubrey's day) would be ok? Not for the bashful,
though.

Let me get this straight, Harry, you had an aluminum outhouse in Alaska. Sounds like one of those "Colder than...." jokes
Chuck
I had an outhouse welded on the back of a 32' Aluminum herring boat that I had in Norton Sound. It
was a straight shot to the water and had been put on by a previous owner. I was well known because of
this, though I would have rather been famous as a highliner. For what it's worth the previous owner's
name was John Bell.

Yes, Peter, I was indeed aware that some of the increased clarity of the
water is due to those rotten little critters (zebra mussels). They form
crusty masses on anything left underwater--including engine cooling
water intakes, municipal water intakes, etc. However, the North Channel
of Lake huron was very clear even before the arrival of these foreign
invaders which probably were brought in via ballast water discharged by
the "Salties" (foreign freighters) that come up the St. Lawrence Seaway.
In fact, there are several islands in the North Channel where the few
cottagers simply run a pipe out into the lake for their drinking water.
I like your suggestion. It would sure be nice if there was some good use
for these miserable mollusks. They are sure prolific. I did read about a
school girl who polishes the shells and make jewelry which she sells at
craft shows.
I understand that if you can sail in salt water for a brief time it will
kill zebra mussels. I don't know if this means they drop off once they
die.

Hi Vince,
I can recall about 30 years ago when it was difficult to see
further then 2 to 3 feet through the cloudy water that passed by
Montréal on its way to the ocean from the Great Lakes. However, the past
several years I have noticed that the water is indeed becoming clearer
and it is not unheard of to see bottom at 20+ feet.I took this to be a
fair indicator of how effective the then new anti-pollution laws
were. All this changed last year when some very concerned
environmentalist spilled the beans. It turns out that it is not so much
the anti-pollution laws that are working but rather a nasty little
foreign critter called the zebra mussel.I cannot recall the
figures, but it appears that these little beasties filter an
astronomical amount of water through their little mouths. So much
so,that they rob other marine life of vital nutrients. They also
multiply like roaches! At haul-out time in late October of this
year, the keel on my MICRO was covered with them as were all the
barrels which support the quays at my club.
Have the Zebra mussels infested the upper Great Lakes?
Perhaps one way to deal with human waste management on board
would be to proceed with the DLD system AND to add several cups of
Zebra mussels into the holding tank.I suspect that it would take very
little time before you would practically be dumping/pumping clean
water overboard from the holding-tank......hmmmmmmmm!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, not wishing to fixate too much on this nasty
reality, from the shores of the sparkling St.Lawrence.........

"...Thanks Peter Lenihan
For the article on marine sanitation.
If I got it right the MICROFOE 2 system I had is legal.
There were no solids the liquid went in to the chlorine tank before
exiting."
Not in the Great Lakes it ain't. No human waste in any form nor anything
that comes out of any device used to contain human waste is allowed.
Only "grey water" from galley or shower, and even that is not legal for
commercial vessels to discharge. There is no treatment or additive that
makes human waste legally dischargeable in the Great Lakes. It is legal
(apparently) to pee or take a dump directly into the lake, however. But
if you use a bucket as an intermediate stop on the way, it is illegal.
Go figure.
Maybe this is the reason you can see your anchor clearly at 30-50 feet
on a calm day in northern Lake Huron.

To those perhaps seeking as much literature possible on the subject
of marine sanitation, here is the link to that article I previously
alluded to from the boatbuilding community page to add to the
collection;
http://boatbuilding.com/content/sanitation.html
There is enough material here to perhaps make it wothwhile to print a
copy and take with you next time one heads off for a session on the
throne.
Happy reading!
