Does Clyde or anyone else have a copy of the "Puffer 40" article
posted where I could see it. Having just moved I am still missing my
back stack of MAIB...I know that they're in a box, but I don't know
which box or which room. Thanks for the help.

Clyde,

Berlin, MD, is a nice little town to retire to. My parents just finished
building a house there, and there are at least three developments in
development (Henry's Mill and Henry's Green come to mind right off -
contact Bunting Realty for details). At any rate, I can highly recommend
Piney Island Builders of Berlin. They have nice designs, can do custom
designs, and the workmanship is very good.

One really nice thing about being on the shore is it puts you in closer
proximity to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.

Good luck!

I really like the other half of that article, the "Puffer 40". When my wife thought I was serious
about sending $2000 to finish the plans, she became much more interested in finding a place to retire
on the Eastern Shore(MD), on land; and hence, my house project. Clyde

Thanks Peter,

Kind of a Single Eagle with traning wheels as regards
Schorpion, wonder how she sails throught he wind, that
is a lot of superstructure.

Computers can be tricky. Sometimes the simplest thing
can take longer than... building a Wyoming. Anyway
thanks on my account.

If you paid for the aggrevation my scanner gave me trying to get the
scan of Schorpioen, I'd be rich. Anyway, look here:

http://www.geocities.com/pvanderwaart/BolgerBoats.html

I really like Arava, the hull and the interior. I could do without
the unusual rig, the side-facing companionway ladder, and the
apparent trouble with stability. For a new rig, we could go with a
cutter rig much like the rig shown, or perhaps a cat-yawl like the AS-
29. Or a more regular schooner, but we want to minimize weight aloft.

I don't have much comment on Schorpioen. Somewhat outre for my tastes.

Peter
Peter,

could you kindly beam up the design for Schorpion, I
have heard of her, and asked this group before if
anyone had lines they could share.

If you are in a generous mood, Arava sounds
interesting also.

Happy New year all!

Found the photo's, Fritz won't have his scanner hooked back up till
tomorrow. It is not the 55' sharpie, it has the most radical use of the
box keel on any of his sailboats that I have seen. It is flushed decked
with a steering box/ pilothouse, and has a rather nice sheer.
Unfortunately the photo's don't show the sheer well, when I took them a
few springs ago, I was more interested in the bow.

More anon.

Volume 16, #6, aka August 1, 1998
I don't remember the name but believe that MAIB had Illinois coupled
with another Bolger boat, one with approximately the same
accomodations and advantages, but one that was shorter and wider.
Would anyone happen to have the particulars on the companion boat?
If so, could they post a link to it?

Thanks...

I decided to spent a few minutes while waiting for the New Year
looking through my incomplete and unorganized stacks of old issues of
MAIB to see if there were any other Bolger designs that fit the brief
which I take loosely to be: sailboat or motor sailor with walking
around room, simple construction and easy to look at.

And the results are:

Honorable mention to: B-31 trimaran Scjorpioen, and the leeboard
cruiser Arava. Not really big enough.

Third Place to: the 12.8m Aluminium Lugger. The design is good, but
the construction is not really what we are looking for.

Second Place to: 45' steel auxillary sailing narrowboat Weston
Martyr. A big boat at 17,000lbs. Steel is not plywood, but the shape
is boxy.

And the winner is: 49'6" Gulf of Mexico Cruiser Concept. A v-bottom
meant for double planking, it can probably be adapted for Reuel
Parker's new cold molding, i.e. double planing with plywood.

I turned up the 55' keel sharpie, and she is indeed similar in
appearance to the Loose Moose.

Overall, I think the best bet is the live-on-board scow schooner.
She's double chine rather than a pure box, and certainly roomy. I
would be interested in PCB's opinion of whether she should try to
beat out of Buzzard's Bay against a smokey sou'wester.

Peter
I think the scow schooner is a beautiful boat. I do agree with you, I
don't think I'd want to beat back from Block Island in it. However,
I've been wondering if a larger version of the same idea would be
just the thing for few weeks on Gardener's Bay, or between the forks!

David

Is this the legendary Keel Sharpie 55?

I saw the drawing and the write up for it a year ago or so. Quite a
project indeed!, I'd love to see the photos! I'm not sure the 55
meets the "easy to look at" criteria, but as I recall, the occasional
ocean passage was a part of the design spec.

My friend Ramon Gandia is building a 50' plus sharpie with box keel in
Nome out of Aluminum by Bolger. The sail is a Chinese Gaffer rig. He has
been at a standstill on construction for a number of years due to
business, financial and now marital problems. He has done good work so
far, especially considering that Nome is not the ideal building spot.

The boat is huge!! I have some photo's kicking around and will attempt
to get them scanned this week. It may not happen right away, as I have a
lot to do in my real job which is where the scanner is. I may walk them
down to Fritz and talk him into scanning them if I can find them.

The "easy to look at" clause is the really hard one. Remember too
that these long thin powerboats may not look quite as you expect
because the houses are build out to the sides, which is not apparent
from the profile drawings.

Aside from the Loose Moose, and the Breakdown Schooner (which I know
you have considered and rejected largely for appearance), there are a
couple others. I don't have a picture at hand of the big Keel Sharpie
but I think it resembles the Moose. The Solution 48 looks different,
but somewhat industrial, I expect. The Scow Schooner was styled by
the artist-client and would have room per dollar, but I don't think
the hull form is just the thing for Rhode Island Sound.

Have you pondered the various forms of the Double Eagle catamaran?
Someone said the AS-29 wasn't hard but it was intricate. That would
go triple for Double Eagle, I suspect.

I doubt that anyone with the gumption to build one of these big boats
needs to limit himself to ply planking. If you open the door to strip
you have a lot of additional possibilities, such as Volunteer.

Peter
Quoting from the article:

"It has to resemble a real boat! You can not risk looking like a
squatter, notwithstanding the fact
that you actually are sort of. Thus, no shantyboats, pretty Belinda
hideaway, and other provocations to nautical sensitivities."

I think this rules out the "Loose Moose II"

What I like about the Illinois is that in exchange for forgoing a
"real sea boat" you get something that looks like a real boat!
Aesthetics are a consideration in any good design. I enjoy the "Loose
Moose II" solution, but the "Illinois" actually comes closer to
answering the question I find myself asking.

Last night my wife and I were speculating on the super-folding
schooner as a starting point for our "Dream Bolger Boat" Big for
bigness sake (not to mention the room!) A tamer schooner rig for both
the romance and true handiness (after 15 months of schooner sailing,
I'll say they have much to recommend them over sloops!) and an honest
respect of being a inshore/near shore boat.

I'm tempted to write a letter!

YIBB,

David

This was a delightful essay to read, especially for small businessmen
kicked once and kicked again by recent events and dreaming of a life
of more appealing obligations. Sooner or later we learn the meaning
of "be careful what you wish for" and I suppose building and living

At any rate, does anyone know if PCB has every drawn a sailboat with
more or less the same idea -- i.e. a god-awful huge boat, easy to
look at and easy to build?

This was a delightful essay to read, especially for small businessmen
kicked once and kicked again by recent events and dreaming of a life
of more appealing obligations. Sooner or later we learn the meaning
of "be careful what you wish for" and I suppose building and living
about "Illinois" would merely give me the opportunity to learn it
again.

At any rate, does anyone know if PCB has every drawn a sailboat with
more or less the same idea -- i.e. a god-awful huge boat, easy to
look at and easy to build?

YIBB,

David

I, too, spend time dreaming about which Bolger boat
I want to build!

I keep coming back to their design #630, Illinois;
which I view as a pure act of genius.

This boat serves all the same needs of Wyoming, but with the
increased size, especially the "top deck" it seems to be
twice the boat at only 50% increase in cost.

Estimating the time to build, 450 sheets of ply
at 4 hours per each would come to 1800 hours =
fortyfive 40hr weeks. Cost 450 sheets @ $50/sheet =
$22,500, round up to $40K.

Equivalant in living space to a studio apartment which
around San Francisco costs $1,500/month. Not counting the
value of your time, a two year payback period. No bad!
