RE: [bolger] Re: Egret versus Black Skimmer
FWIW, we cruised two chartered Skimmers in the Keys years ago, and I
vividly recall sailing mine like a big dinghy when the wind piped up
(yes, you CAN sail a Skimmer with everybody hiked out!); the difference
between the two, IMHO, is that the Skimmer is capable of staying on it's
feet longer. Can't compare ghosting abilities, but thought the design
went rather well in light airs. I'm a great admirer of the Commodore's
designs, but have never had the opportunity to sail a 'pure' rendition
of Egret or her sisters...

effect that Black Skimmmer would outsail Egret "blow high, blow low."
At any rate, no particular explantion was offered.
MY theory, not to be ascribed to PCB, is far superior sail-carrying
power. Skimmer is wider, lower, and shorter ended. As boats go, Egret
is narrow bottomed and high-sided with substantial flare, which makes
the deck wider/heavier.
PCB might add his usual argument about the Skimmer's higher, wider
bow being better for flow characteristics around the chine.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Bolger believes his Black Skimmer is a faster and more able boat than the Egret, but
can't remember the explanation, if there was one.
I'm not inclined to argue, but would like to understand the thinking here. Can anyone explain please?
thanks, Gavin
