Shivaree
Having just received my "mega MAIB issue" for Jan. I am interested in
the bigger Shivaree's. Bruce, do I recollect that you have built a shivaree?

Paul,
I'd love to see a picture of your model! Thanks for the ideas. I
hadn't considered lapstrake but now I'll take a look.

With the 7'1" beam it's amazing what you can put in that boat, like a
double birth running athwart ship. I wanted to find out hard it was to
apply the strips with all the twist in the bow. I built starboard side
one way and port another. Was surprised that the best way was by
starting at the keel and letting them run out. I documented all
dimensions and econometrics to fit my own(6'1"). I found out among
other things, at least with strip, there is no need for a floor if the
living space is kept aft. The bilge is so flat that by standing on the
bottom will give added head room. At any rate you will have to stand
up in walkway to see where your going. The model has been sitting on
my bench for two years. My feelings now are that I have down sized and
after seeing the various versions of Hope, I will build her in lap as
it is easier and less tedious, although i would not attempt lap for
Seguin as she has too much twist. Lap for Shivaree would be the way to
go.IMHO Paul

The latest version of this design is Bolger's Design #648. He refers
to it as the "Shivaree 18", but it was called "Lobster Skiff" in a
Boat Design Quarterly review (BDQ 18). All three of these designs,
the original 16' Shivaree, the Lobster Skiff and the Fisherman's
Launch have the same cross sections. The stations are just spaced
differently. To confuse the issue even more Bolger also refers to
the "Fisherman's Launch" as "Sometime or Never". This design is
21'4" long and is his Design #537. I don't know the design number
for the original Shivaree.
I am currently lofting a 20' version, using the "Lobster
Skiff"/"Shivaree 18" plans as a starting point.
