The "best" book is the Gougeon Brothers on Boat
Building. They are engineers and have studied wood
aircraft structures, including the Spruce Goose (Birch
actually, rumour has it this project lead to the
development of the nail gun). They recomend the
Munitions Board's design of wood aircraft book, which
I got a government reprint of. Its heavy sleading.
The Gougeons have built some of the lightest boats in
history, their 35' tris weigh in the 2200# range. But
they are enourmously complicated structures, with
thousands of small parts. The instant boat kind of
thing is vastly simpler, and its hard to see the
necesity of studying aircraft manuals to work out
their engineering. What is it Bolger said? He uses
the 1/2" doubled bottoms on boats up to 9' wide.
Simple enough.

Another excellent source of wood data is in a book written say in the thirties; TRAYER, "Wood in Aircraft Construction" (check your local universities - use the interlibrary loan service).
