Re: SILICON-BRONZE SCREWS

Apparently I was not clear in my previous posting. The sources that
were recommended directed me to vendors that were able to supply the
fasteners that I needed in the quantities that I need them in. Once
again, thank you for your help and recommendations.

I should have left the 2nd paragraph out of the posting. I was
blowing off a little steam. Please pardon me if you will.
What distributors have you tried? Several have been mentioned,
including Jamestown Distributors, and Clarkcraft. Some people have
been lucky and can find them locally, in small quantities. Online,
you usually have to order more than you need, and then get hit with a
minimum shipping charge.

In my own kayaks, I ended up substituting stainless steel, brass, or
copper, but silicon bronze is best. I couldn't see ordering more than
I needed, either, so everytime I needed something I ended up going to
West Marine for a small handful of stuff. Funny, that small handful
was always like ten dollars or so. I think it is easier, and cheaper
to just order everything you need at once, saving on minimum shipping
charges, and having some left over for the next boat.

You can also try Defender Industries athttp://www.defender.com

But what is it exactly that you need? Specificy what sizes and
quantities, and maybe we can help.

My comment about Home Depot prior, was to be careful of
substitutions, because some of their brass screws, for instance, are
more like brass coated decorative screws. Sometimes they have
assorted hardware in boxes like old time hardware stores used to
carry, and those are usully solid brass, but I've never seen silicon
bronze.

> I'm not sure what the problem is: Is it that you want to order or
buy only four screws? Is it that the size you want is unavailable?
If you would be a bit more specific, perhaps we can help after all.

I used a lot of silicon bronze screws in my own boat, all bought locally.
What size(s) exactly are you looking for and where do you live?

First, I would like to thank the members of this group for spending
their time to respond with information has been not only useful but
necessary in locating materials and suggesting means and methods.
When I've been stumped on finding oddball parts (i.e. a source for
silicon-bronze screws in odd-ball sizes that are not carried by even
the top of the line chandeliers) the members of this group have been
a godsend. When I've asked for opinions on techniques that I've
contemplated or applied, I've received responses that have been
invaluable. For these I am grateful beyond mere words that someone
would take the time to thoughtfully answer an inquiry from a total
stranger. Once again I sincerely thank you.

Somewhat like a sword, this small note has a second edge. When I
come to the members of this group with an inquiry it is because I
have exhausted the avenues of inquiry available (including web
searches) and only burden the members of this group with my questions
when i have no other lead to pursue. Please do not tell me to enter
my request into a search engine. During the last two days I have
called a dozen suppliers found by yahoo, google and other search
engines and found that not all that glitters is gold. Other
boatbuilder are the best resource that I have found for the essential
information that is sometimes required. I have reached dead ends
many times and have been pulled through by someone else's experience
(usually because at sometime, someone else has always run into the
same problems as myself).

Thank you.
