Ah Bob, what little innocence remains to me is fast disappearing on the
cold winds of reality...

THanks for the tip.

Bob, I wondered, but the local Honda agents were not, shall we say,
forthcoming - "No, no, there's only the prop you already have, now can
we interest you in our latest...".

Do you have a part number for the lugging prop on your "old style"
Honda?

except when the skipper kicks it into full ahead to stop the boat
neatly in its pen....when it should have been a burst astern...

Yamaha both in Oz and Japan, on the other hand, did a lot of work to
match particular lugging props for their 9.9 for use on Tennessees and
on Norwalk Islands SHarpies. OTOH Phil's River Van packs a dirty great
Honda as its powerhouse.

Not a value judgement, just statement:

Lady Kate runs an old Honda 9.9 4-stroke as her auxilliary (cotterpin
prop, exhaust above prop). We're happy with it when going ahead,
certainly we were happy with the price (the purchase was price-driven).
Reliable, plenty of push, takes abuse, but...hopeless when going astern,
something of a drawback as 3 tons of Lady Kate charges the pier, wharf,
other boats, ferries etc...

I'm told that newer Honda 9.9s still do much the same, presumably
because the propeller is trying to cut through aerated water from the
exhaust outlet.

Most serious people using 9.9s here go for the Yamaha, because of its
absolute stopping power. Hence you'll see them lugging away on
Tennessees and larger sailboats.

For most of us, not a choice, we go with what's available,
affordable....

I guess I can add that the Honda 9.9 that I had on my Tennessee always
worked fine in either direction. When I bought it, I was aware of the
difference in props, though, and asked for the low speed one. I remember
having a discussion with the dealer in which he told me a story of a guy who
put an outboard on a work barge of some kind. The thing would hardly go
until this dealer fixed him up with the right prop at which point the
grateful boat owner was buzzing all over the lake.

A knowledgeable dealer should know all about this stuff. One warning,
though - Last year I priced a new prop for my slightly worn one ( to have a
spare ) and they were around $80US. I had to replace the tiller which was
broken in a conflict with a tree. That one was over $100. I guess if you
had to build one of these motors from parts, it would be pretty expensive.

I will look for the size and pitch when I see my outboard next. I have found
that both Honda and Yamaha people do not have a clue about the actual use of
their products the best bet is go to a company that makes props and ask them
for the replacement prop for your needs and they will come up with the right
answer.

Tim you may find that the problem with your Honda is the prop...The Yamaha 4
strokes are geared down and have a prop which was designed for displacement
vessels. I replaced the Yamaha 9.9 four stroke on Loose Moose with a Honda
four stroke 9.9 and had the same problem until I swapped the prop....after
which it improved 400%. A prop designed to push a 10 foot inflatable just
does not work for a displacement boat.

Both the Honda and Yamaha 4 strokes are excellent engines and a side note of
import...Pollution from two stroke engines world wide is equal to 11 Exxon
Valdez disasters per YEAR...I have been working here in the caribbean with a
group trying to promote clean cruising and the easiest way all of us can
help is to quit pouring oil into our seas.

Something else no one has yet mentioned is that if you run a 4 stroke for a
season or two you will have saved more money in fuel economy and not having
to buy 2 stroke oil that you will more than have made up the difference in
cost of oa 4 stroke over a 2 stroke,

If anyone is interested I have an unused Honda 9.9 4 stroke for sale. It
is the "old style" Honda that I bought as a spare engine for Loose Moose. It
is shop worn but has never even had oil in the crankcase and has a lugging
prop as described. Price $1200. catch its in St Thomas.

Sorry for the rant
