This is pretty standard stuff in the literature, we
even have the toothing plane, which is the same but
different. Part of the argument is do you need a
fresh surface, that is part of what we talking about
here, another part of the argument is do glues sink
in, and mechanicaly lock in the fibers, do they
chemicaly bond, or do they lock to surface
roughnesses. Or all three. The answers vary with the
timber, the glue, the process, etc... at least we
aren't guessing with modern glues and science. The
toothing plane alows one to rough the surface for
bonding to allow all of the above to occur in an
orderly way. That said, the toothing plane while
still sold isn't necesary or greatly used in NA.
