built two and wrote an article in Boatbuilder about it. I have not seen
him on the list for awhile. He responded well to emails from me so give
him a try. From his reports and others it would seem that the Cartopper
sails well, and can handle fairly rough conditions.

Payson will also sell the construction article with the plans. If you
own "Build the new instant boats" by him it would be superfluous.
A final thought on the Cartopper, there are two under construction in my
shop (very slowly) by my sons. You can not see clearly in photos what a
work of art this little boat is. If you look at it from any angle it's
all balanced curves and lines.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my request. I'll probably buy
from Payson.
Is there anyone out there who's built or sailed a Cartopper, who can
give me some feedback on how it performs under oar and sail?
Thanks,
Kellan
from Payson.

In this case, and for the other Instant Boats, I think he should by them
from Dynamite Payson, who is an _authorized_ dealer for some Bolger plans.
Payson will give better support of the building process, he's actually
built the bopats. You can just phone him up if you have a problem and he or
his wife can probably set you right in no time:

Payson built a cartopper for an article in Wooden Boat (check their online
index) which also appeared in their book "10 Wooden Boats", or something
like that. Unlike the other "30 Wooden Boats", "50 Wooden Boats" or

plans and building articles for 10 boats.

When I think of the number of disagreeable people that I know have gone
to a better world, I am sure hell won't be so bad at all. <Mark Twain>
Let me answer the following question that was not asked directly:
What makes Cartopper different from any other 11'6" skiff?
After some experimentation, Bolger and Payson decided to try a design
with a small centerboard well forward and an expecially big rudder.
This way the centerboard is out of the middle of the boat where it
would be very much in the way.
Bolger also used the two chines to give the boat a nicer shape than
is possible in a straight flat bottom boat. One result is the
slightly narrower stern that makes it a little more important for the
crew to stay forward in the middle of the boat and not lounge back
against the transom.
There is a range of boats from "rowboats fitted with sail"
through "rowing/sailing boats" to "sailboats with oar auxillary." A
lot of boats called 'skiffs' fall in the first two categories, but
Cartopper was designed to be a sailboat, first and foremost.

I can only address your last question, where to buy your plans. Buy 'em
from Phil Bolger and Friends. Phil drew the plans. He figured out how the
boat you want to build should work and to be built. He should get the
revenue from the sale of his plans and his ideas.

Hi,
I'm toying with the idea of building a Bolger Cartopper and was
hoping someone out there could answer some questions for me:
1)What is the Cartopper's empty weight?
2)What's its capacity? (lbs. & persons)
3)What sail rig options are given in the plans? What is the squar
footage of the recommended sails?
4)What kind of lateral resistance plane does it use and what others,
if any have been used (centerboard, daggerboard, leeboards)?
5) What is the approximate construction time for someone with a
little boatbuilding experience and a decent shop?
6) How much should I expect to spend?
7) Where should I buy the plans?
Thanks,
Kellan
