Re: [bolger] Build It & They Will Come.
Rich,
The database is good. Don't let it turn into another job, though.
If PB&F will fill out one page once for you with the CSD and
/ or other design fees, I'd think it could save a tremendous
lot of time.

I faxed Bolger this morning to let him know what we are doing and for
his blessing. I don't think that we can include a hyperlink to
pictures in Yahoo and I am not so sure that we should. What I asked
him about was what is there currently. I think that the responsible
thing to do is really no more than we are. I shudder to think of
seeing a listing for CSD in the database and then Mr. Bolger asking
us to stop. Maybe if we had pricing from PB&F on the same designs
that CSD advertises in the database, that might cure that nightmare
from happening. Does anyone have those prices from Bolger? I am
really starting to doubt my staring this database. Wish I would get a
fax back from Bolger saying full steam ahead.

Yahoo database is only flat, but there could be workarounds. The

One other, [probably academic], issue involves accountability. The
people over on the Aquatic Plants Mailing list maintained a

I believe that keeping a database, and the keeping files in Bolger
and Bolger2 amount to "fair use" under the Copyright Act.
I thing that the Plants Mailinglist lawsuit was mostly due to
the "negative review" and we all are huge fans of Phil Bolger. The
only thing that I can remotely consider that might be an issue is
that somehow keeping a database & files might be viewed as dimishing
the value of their copyright. Though I think that if anything,
keeping a database & files would increase the value of thier
copyright.
Trying to read between the lines of the CSB spat, it seems that the
real grief comes from the apparent commercial use [I.E. selling] of
old PB designs without paying commissions. All the uses I see here
at Bolger and Bolger2 are non-commercial, and amount to research,
news reporting, and critical review which are explicitly termed "fair
use" by the Copyright Act.

numbered, for instance, many of the "cartoons" in the Small Boat

Cost would be cost of plans?
Wouldn't it be a good idea to have a description field too?
Rich,
You might want to add the Bolger Design Number, as a number of his
deigns have been referred to by different names. For example, Design
No. 537 is called "Sometime or Never" in the latest WoodenBoat
magazine and called "Fisherman's Launch" in BWOM. Including the
Design Number (if known) might eliminate some duplication.

Hi,
It was suggested to build a datbase of Bolger's plans with everyone
in the group contributing what they knew of. Please check out the new
database I made and add add add. If anyone wants to alter the feilds,
please let me know. (I may have missed something. Here are the feilds;

2) Length
3) Power or Sail
4) Plan Cost
5) Availability (where to get them)
Simple, yes?
If I am out of line, please send me to work on my boat.
