Re: micro's sails

Marco,

I can't define "well-cut", but I can say that the very first set of
MICRO sails that Sailrite designed were for our BANTY....hey, you
have to get your glory where you can!

The Sailrite-designed mainsail has sufficient drive to lay a MICRO on
her beam's end......I guarantee it. Actually, that may not say it's
a perfect sail, just that I'm an imperfect sailer..... but that's
another story.

Personally, I think that it would be difficult to get too much belly
in a MICRO main. I'm not sure I agree with changing the reef points
from the original design.....although I don't think it's a major
problem.

Here's my reasoning. An often overlooked aspect of the sprit boom is
that you have a large degree of control over how much 'belly' the
main has. After sailing BANTY for over 10 years, in wildly varying
conditions, I find that you can effectively tie in a first "reef" by
simply snugging the snotter... really flattening the main. In light
air, relax the snotter, tune for 'big belly' and enjoy the (lack of)
wind.

If the wind pipes up a bit, first tighten the snotter (flatten the
main/remove the belly) which really takes a lot of drive out of the
main. If the wind kicks up even more, reef and perhaps put some
belly back in. The point is, you get a free "half-reef" with the
sprit boom/snotter setup.

For the mizzen....flat, flat, flat. Oh, did I say, cut the mizzen
FLAT!

I don't know if Sailrite still offers the service, but in the past,
you could pay them to simply design your sail(s) for you....and
purchase/cut/sew your own material. It used to be a very inexpensive
service. Jeff Frank is their head designer....drop him an e-mail.
He's a good guy.

Regardless, enjoy your MICRO and your sails. Sewing up your own wind
bags just makes the sailing that much more rewarding.

Regars,

John

Hi Marco,
I bought Sailrite kits for my Micro sails; as I have not yet sailed with
them I cannot report on how they perform, but the sewing of the kit went
quite well. I will say that I was very impressed - when I called them I
spoke with the principal sailcutter there, and he was friendly, patient,
very knowledgeable, and quite familiar with the Micro sails - truly the
right man for his job: an expert at a very complex art, yet capable of
dealing graciously with the public everyday. He had a number of alternatives
and suggestions ready to offer me when I began asking the right questions (I
studied 'the Sailmaker's Apprentice' for a few days before calling, and was
glad I did - I highly recommend the book too). We talked about how many
reefing points the sail should have and where to put them (he felt Bolger's
single reef point was too drastic, and suggested a couple smaller
intervals), which way to cut the sail both for ease of construction, and for
long-term ability to alter the shape as it ages; the best way to attach the
sail to the spars, etc. I feel confident that my sails will perform well,
from my interactions with Sailrite. Time will tell! I would encourage you to
contact them with your questions, I'm sure it will be informative.

Ciao Marco
I thought you were building Micro Navigator which should have a
Bolger chinese gaff rig...
Anyway, I've read somewhere in the old CSD newsletters good words
from Phil Bolger himself with respect to the Sailrite Micro kits. You
may want to drop a line to them to check which kind of shape they
give to those sails...
Cheers

Marco;

Bernie Wolford still ran CSB back in the early days of this list. He
and PCB&F had not parted ways yet. Here is his answer to a
question similar to yours (I copied it to my Micro folder).

Dan,

It is in the true nature of a home boat builder to want to build your
own sails. I don't think this is a way to save money, but it is a
great learning experience and a way to demystify on of the "black
arts" of sailing.

All cat-yawl rigs will sail like they are dragging a bucket if the
main sail isn't cut correctly. I wish I could give you the seam taper
measurements, but alas, I don't know them. Here, however, are
the
general guidelines I gave the old CSD sail maker, and would
share
with another sail maker who asked. These are really from Mike
O'Brien, assistant editor @ WoodenBoat Magi.

The main should be cut like a Blade (a type of genoa) with the
largest amount of camber you can get without wrinkles in the
sail,
the deepest point of camber about 1/3 of the way back from the
luff.
This is farther back and much more camber than a sloop sail.
The
trailing edge of the sail (leach) is absolutely flat from the deepest
point of the camber to the leach.

The mizzen is simple, just cut it flat. It is a steering and balance
sail, not a driving sail.

Marco, I hope this is of use to you...

Dear bolgerlisters, I will try to explain me with my poor English .
I am building a micro - slowly - and I read very often that this boat sails
well winward if he has well cut sails. What doesn't ever find it is the
meaning of " well cut sail" I wonder if exist a graphic way for plan also
the
" belly " of the sail of the micro, and not only his contours. In this way I
could verify if the sailmaker has cut the sail well or, if I want to cut it,if
I made a good job.
Is it an unusual question?
