Re: What if?

Paul,

Well, thats certainly the best way I know to check WoodenBoat's
reaction to PB, although i was thinking more of the WB quarterly
catalog with plans, etc for sale. While WB may or may not be advocates
of PB's work, i don't believe they would let this stand in the way of
intelligent merchandising. Testing the waters by first offering 2 of
Bolger's most popular designs like Chebacco and Micro would allow
them to consider a larger selection if sales are good. Looking at the
numbers on this list along with enthusiastic followers in MAIB'should
provide them with the incentive to do this. While WB may be a bit
biased in it's magazine content, their other operations such as the
WB Store and WB boat show are more profit driven.
This is all just my opinion, although it would be really neat to be
able to call or e-mail WB for Phil's plans and it would also be a
more linear form of cash flow to PB as he ages, sort of a pension
plan. I see his plans as only becoming more popular as time goes by.
just a thought.

As both a Bolger fan and a WB subscriber, I took the liberty of contacting
Matt Murphy, one of WB's editors, about some of the comments about WB
perceived attitude regarding PCB. Here is his prompt reply:

Thanks for the heads up, Paul. It is true that Mike has the most affection
for Bolger's designs (of WB's three editors). But there's no institutional
plan to drop Bolger like a hot yam. We all appreciate his out-of-the-box
thinking.

Likewise, we have no policy of focusing only on gold-platers (actually, I'm
not sure I know what "gold plater" means). We do make an effort to promote
only top-shelf workmanship in the magazine's process articles-even with the
simplest of skiffs

Best--
Matt Murphy

I meant to say "only a few Bolger boats in the Launchings section", sorry.

The same goes, of course, for Jim Michalak. When do you think WB will do
a profile of him? Soon, you say? What's that flying by my window, and
why do their droppings smell of pork so?

In general, WoodenBoat is focusing almost entirely on gold-platers. You'll
find only a few in the Launching section, and of these, only a tiny
fraction are the backyard-builder type.

The only person at WoodenBoat who consistently supports Bolger as worthy
of coverage is Mike O'Brien (the guy who built the first Black Skimmer).
He's not in top health, and when he stops working for WB, they'll drop
most of PCB's stuff like a hot yam.

In short, I think that WB largely thinks that PCB, and people like us, are
beneath them, except to drool over the fine work of highly skilled folk
Down East.

Sorry to extend this topic although i have been out of town the past
few days and didn't get to jump in.
What if "WoodenBoat" took over distributing rights for Bolger's
plans? They have the size to do a thorough job of this along with the
real bonus of allowing PB to do his thing designing boats and not
dealing with a high precentage of dreamers. A lot of Bolger's
problems could have been prevented by a simple copyright years ago
which is renewable every 10 years. Lets face it PB is a bit of a
recluse and only available when he wants to be. A boatbuilding friend
of mine wrote a very consise letter to PB 5 years ago about drawing
up a set revised Chebbacco plans. He is a college professor and a
woodworker of the highest degree. He even paid extra for registered
delivery and provided a stamped return envelope. Guess what, no
answer of any type,ever.

International Marine publishing did PB's books years ago and WB
carries most of their publications along with several other noted
designers plans. These 2 concerns could jointly work out a aggrement
w/ PB which i'm sure would be benifical to everyone including us, the
builders. It would provide the builders reasonble access to PB's
plans.

Someone mentioned about PB's plans being inexpensive...This only
seems to apply to his plans available through Payson, His other plans
are just as expensive as any other designer.

I firmly feel that a designer does have a responsibilty to represent
his work in a clear concise way. If you cannot do this by testing
your designs, answering intelligent questions and providing
performance figures. You should step away from the business.
Your designs are a direct relection on yourself since your name is on
them, and your name and integrity are really the only thing you have
in life.

Sorry for this delay in regular Bolger list activities although if
some of these suggestions were followed, we would have even more
great Philip Bolger designs to talk about. Isn't this why we are here?
