Re: lug sail with offset mast

Could be. When the low pressure side is up, a force is created that
resists heel. When down, it would increase the heeling moment. Of
course, if the sail were far enough over to the side of the boat, it
could matter less.
Which makes me think. If you had a trimaran with the mast stayed out
to the amas, then if you rig a small sail on the bottom portion of
the windward stay so the vector of force created went down between
the ama and the main hull, it would create a righting force as well
as a driving force....

If the angle of the mast is not sacred, is the angle of the sail? Why not have the mast straight, and just angle the sail away from it? Would the difference in lift be that big a deal?

I was looking at the postings in Bolger2 files for an offset mast to
improve the setting of a lugsail. To summarise, the suggestion is to
use a masthead crane to hang the sail a short ways from mast.
First let me say that I think that having the sail lie against the
mast causing a "dent" in the sail is probably less harmful than
having the mast standing proud of the sail in the very most critical
part of the airfoil.
But, second, let me ask, why not set the mast in a offset step angled
so the mast head is over the centerline? This could be done fairly
easily in Jesse Cooper, for example. (There is a hatch to be dealt
with...) If we are trying to think like PCB, we don't want to be hung
up on details like having out mast verticle.
Peter (who knows that there are serious sail-handling issues but is
not worrying about them at this time.)
